About this time the FTC litigated a case against Ford over what were called \"secret warranties\". In a cost cutting move, Ford eliminated some internal engine oil passages which resulted in piston-scuffing, worn camshafts and cracked blocks. Meanwhile our parents sat up front, talking adult things and listening to WCBS News Radio New York and doing their best to ignore us. One benefit of being the youngest, and at least temporarily the smallest, was that I had parentally-declared perma-dibs on riding on a giant cushion in the back-back (or wayback, if you so prefer) as our Squire did not have the jump seats. So while I was free to roam the real estate back there, my sisters waged an unending war, attacking one another for property rights in the second row... which is odd considering they each had acres of space to themselves if they just let it be. I'll never forget the feeling of tender skin on the backs of your legs touching the scorching hot vinyl, or the sound of a hubcap parting company with the wheel as we hit The Bump going over the George Washington Bridge on our way to summer vacation (and some appropriately choice language from the helm), or the way my dad so meticulously wrapped our luggage and fishing gear on the roof in a tarp to keep it dry for the drive.
