That said, the guy I bought it from did keep it in a covered parking spot and owned no less than 7(!) late 240 wagons which he kept great care of- and clearly knew everything about. He did a lot of work himself which probably contributed to the lack of service history.\r\n\r\nRegarding how it starts, runs, drives, shifts: no issues, it starts right up even when it's freezing out, and drives beautifully. The only engine-related issue I ever had with the car in the year I have owned it was a loud, buzzing main fuel pump (car still drove fine), but I went ahead and replaced that with a brand new Bosch unit as a preventative measure. I did notice that there's some rust on the exhaust pipes, so there could be a leak.\r\n\r\nI've owned a 1978 242 DL 2 door with a 4 speed + OD, a 1979 265 Wagon with auto, a 1985 240 GL sedan with auto and a 1987 240 DL Wagon with a 4 speed + OD. All had a very quiet exhaust. Not as quiet as a Cadillac, but none of them has an exhaust note while driving.\r\n\r\nAs a previous owner of these cars, I can attest to the quality and longevity of Volvo 240s. The only one we had which I would say was a problem car was the 1979 265 - it had a V6 that was a Peugeot, Renault Volvo collaboration. After 300 feet or so the car grinds to a stop. Doors open and a woman and her 6 or 7 yr old daughter crawl out. And walk way to the shoulder of the highway. \nI get to them and there are no injuries at all. None. She tells me the guy in the pick up truck wanted to pass her, (she was in the fast lane) but said she was doing 75mph in a 60 zone already. Felt no need to make room for him, so he catches the corner of her rear bumper swerving to the right lane to pass. Just enough to send her into the concrete center divider which launched the car airborne and upside down at 75 mph...Except for the shattered windshield I believe that car could have been flipped back over and driven home. Besides the windshield, the only other damage visible was the first 10 inches of the roof was missing from being ground away by the pavement on the road.\nHave also seen a lot of these after an encounter with a moose or elk in the high country of Colorado. It sat in the back of my garage for several years, then we sold the car. The tranny never went out....it's just an annoying sound. The rest of this car seems to be in awesome shape. It\u2019s the spring and fall that are the most variable. Sometimes early, sometimes late, sometimes warm, sometimes cold, sometimes wet, sometimes way wetter. Ya never know, and as a farmer it often feels like Ma Nature\u2019s trying to play games with ya. Regarding climate change: the biggest example we\u2019ve had is the increasing summer heat events like last summer\u2019s \u201cheat dome\u201d. Wild fires didn\u2019t used to be so commonplace in our area. Three years ago the \u2018Eagle Creek\u2019 fire stopped just 6 miles to the east. The summer of 2020 we got lucky, but other areas suffered badly and everyone endured bad air for weeks.
