Some random thoughts from someone who uses a 2002, 154k mi, as a daily driver as well as for bird hunting and an occasional trip to the Rockies. I'll start with really the only negative. It comes with a minor buyer beware issue that I have had with both 4Runners I've owned and that is the P0440 engine light code. Not all 4Runners experience this, but I am constantly battling it on my 2002 and Yota blogs are chock full of various remedies of how to fix it. So far I have replaced EVAP canister, fuel filler pipe, next up is dropping the tank and replacing the check valves, fuel pump and fuel cut off valve. She runs just fine, but that darn engine light. So what should a potential buyer ask? Has it has ever had any EVAP issues and what was done to fix it. Fixing just one item on this list typically does not turn off the engine light. Nuff said, back to the reasons you might keep an eye on this 4Runner auction. For me, it is the perfect all-around size for most users, the newer generations are nice but they have grown so much. It is narrow and does not have a very long wheelbase but they proportioned it big enough to swallow about anything I need at Home Depot and yet be relatively comfortable for my 6'2 frame. Gotta love the window in the back that lowers, many a long 2x4 has it allowed me to carry, why don't other manufacturers offer this option that Toyota does for 4Runners, Sequoias, and Tundras? The stock roof rack system was ahead of its time and has come in real handy. Zoom in on the roof photos and you will see why. I'll wrap it up by noting one final feature we don't see anymore these days. It may be one of the last Toyota vehicles to have glass headlights!
