(probably what hastened the demise of the lifters). I used it for fishing trips mostly because it was cheap to run and was less then pristine, unlike this one. One night after going to the circle track races we were heading home on a dirt backroad and it had rained, where water had washed out the road there was a small ditch that we flew over and kept on going. Next morn I started it and engine rattled, The oil pan was peeled back from the front of the engine and the front crossmember was bent. I still have the engine as a spare for an tube frame mid-engine buggy. It has a built 2.0L in it.\r\nAs others have noted, the Pintos handled well for their time, really well after some Racer Walsh suspension parts, I had a Pinto wagon that outran a number of 510's and 2002's in the day with same engine that is in the buggy. It had been parked for at least 10yrs after the PO had blown a heater hose in rush hour traffic on a hot day. He thought he had killed it but they are tougher than that. In all honesty I bought it for the 2litre motor as I needed one for my 73 Capri. Car was too complete and original to dismantle. My theory on how it survived: it was a four wheel drum brake car and therefore wouldn\u2019t stop fast enough to get rear ended and burst into flames. It had had the fuel tank recall kit installed. This car handled great and even better after the installation of some kyb shocks and some Fittipaldi 15\u201d wheels from a fox body mustang. 205/60-15 Michelin\u2019s XVXs. Embarrassed some much more expensive vehicles regularly. At the same time I owned the pinto I also had two 73 capris (a 2 liter and a hot rodded w/2.8 v6), a 72 Vega, a 73 gremlin X, a 71 Celica, 69 corona 4dr 4spd, a 79 spitfire and a 79 Nissan pickup. Sadly the spitfire is all that remains of the collection. I do still have a couple of small boxes of pinto parts if the new owner is interested and another set of hubcaps.\r\nOf the pinto, Vega and gremlin the gremlin being a hornet with a bob job was designed with v8 power in mind. A friend still has one of those gremlins with a dealer installed 401ci motor. The pinto was an easy v8 swap compared to a Vega. \r\nMy pinto was improved with the installation of rear opera lights from a late sixties t-bird, a Ford quadraphonic stereo from a late 70s LTD and eventually an 8.8 limited slip rear end from a mustang II cobra II. It was a Runabout with 2.0 liter, 4-speed and A/C. In addition to these it had the Sprint Decor Option and a manual sunroof.\r\n\r\nModifications by me included replacing the A78-13 narrow band wsw tires on steel wheels with hubcaps and trim rings with a set of 175-13 Sears Roadhandler radials (made by Michelin for Sears) on a set of aluminum wheels. I replaced the shocks with adjustable Gabriel Striders and removed the factory steering wheel and replaced it with a smaller diameter racing one from Racer Walsh. The car was a blast to drive. Proof that speed is not the right measure in a great driving experience. This put me on a lifelong attraction to sporty subcompact hatchbacks.\r\n\r\nFord encouraged Pinto owners to do their own maintenance and a manual was available for purchase. I bought it and did all of the maintenance including the annual valve lash adjustment. I also did all of the repairs including replacing the timing belt and the valve stem seals which I learned on some 2.0 engines had the wrong ones installed from the factory.\r\n\r\nLearned a lot on how to work on cars and had a lot of fun driving the Pinto. With its wide stance and short wheelbase the terms \"neutral\" and \"tossable\" would describe the handling. I even took it to a gravel road near our house and learned to do handbrake turns.\r\n\r\nThe Pinto met with a tragic end when I let my younger brother who was beginning a life of substance abuse wrecked it. And what an engine it is! These German designed crossflow head 2 liter engines could make 180hp with off the shelf racing parts from Ford Racing. We had to have the head rebuilt several times, new tires-Firestone 721s, and I don't remember what all wound up being done to it. It was fun to drive and the interior and exterior were in perfect condition, just engine issues. Mom was never told, but dad and I estimated we had about $4,000 in the Pinto between us. We should have replaced the engine. We had an old motorhome and a tow bar that attached to a front bumper. One of my brothers was driving the motorhome and another was supposed to be watching the Pinto from the rear window. Dad told them to stay on back roads and not go through any towns. They drove through Canton, Tx during First Monday Trade Days, both sitting up front. The motorhome made the turn at a stop light. The Pinto didn't. It popped off the tow bar and sailed into the side of a brand new diesel pusher motorhome. The passenger side headlight bezel was crushed and the fender was pushed back so the door wouldn't open. That was all the damage it had, but the motorhome had $4k in damages. Dad was...not happy. The Pinto was parked on my parent's property along with a bunch of other cars. I have the last pic on my phone before we had the property cleaned off last month. The Pinto had an 8 inch tree growing up between the crunched fender and the hood. My best friend's parents bought him a brand new 78 Pinto sedan our senior year, white with a red interior, v-6, and automatic.
