Mr. Brundage also bought a 250 SWB steel body at the same time and shipped both back together. My father was offered either but I believe the SWB was about $2,000 more and I think having the two jump seats that my little sisters could fit in helped ease what was considered by family and friends to be a bit arriviste. The SWB was purchased by another doctor in town who drove it for a number of years. Mr. Brundage did not become a Ferrari dealer so the question of service became an issue until a German mechanic at the VW dealership in town who was terrific took care of it for about four years until he moved back to Germany. For the whole time the car was driven every day and ran flawlessly. Unfortunately, the clutch began to slip and some local yahoos made a mess of fixing it and it went for $3,000 toward a 1966 911. I salvaged and still have the swivel joint plug wrench as a memento. In the days before radar you could have some thrilling long distance runs and I remember several over 200-300 miles trips averaging 90+ mph. It was a common thought at the time that for hard open road driving the GTE was a better balanced car than the SWB. I was able to wrangle out of fishing on a Sunday morning and verified on a straight ten mile, narrow two-lane road built out of the swamp between Mosquito Lagoon and Cape Canaveral (now Cape Kennedy) that with overdrive in and a teenage brain that it indicated 140 mph at the 7,000 redline. My lasting impression is that the road and the telephone poles look like they are converging at that speed. The car did have two quirks. One was that even at high speed, in cool weather the shutter in front of the radiator was there for a reason as the termometro acqua would start to drop. The other was that in shifting too fast into third you could hit a brick wall and overrev if weren't careful.
