We believe this is the first public auction of a Bones car. We know of only two others that privately traded hands in the past.\r\n\r\nMany of you know the story of the Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop in Greenfield Center, NY. If you are not familiar with the work of Ken Schmidt & Keith Cornell along with Ken's son Matt, I highly encourage you to watch our 20 minute interview with the owner of #22. The Rolling Bones legacy is an amazing story of two artisans and one customer intent on having them build him a car... the rest is history.\r\n\r\nAs we mentioned this is the 22nd build for the Bones team and it's a '32 5-window coupe. The story of this particular car started in 2013 on a cold February night in an old cow barn with a group of like-minded enthusiasts. Ken Schmidt was a fine artist, selling his western landscape paintings before he dedicated himself to building hot rods. \r\n\r\nNaturally, paint was one of Ken's specialties. He would create the 'patina' in the paint and in a unique-to-him technique he also added the 'crazing' or 'cracking' on the paint. The car was meant to evoke the look of a body that has decades of wear on the paint. Here is what he told me:\r\n\r\n\"The roof is made up of two panels, one interior (solid) and one exterior (louvered). The interior panel is solid no openings or louvers and mounted to the interior wooden frames. The panel is shaped to direct water to the drains that exit to the underside of the body. The louvered top fits into the body as shown and is secured by custom fabricated Dzus fasteners. The Dzus fasteners are threaded and thread into fabricated female fasteners through the interior wooden frames as shown in picture #89.\r\n\r\nAir flow with the door windows down and cowl vent open provides plenty of air circulation and still quiet enough to carry on a conversation. They were WWII vets and Korean War vets who were buying a home, getting married and starting to raise a family. My father-in-law and all his friends were working two or three jobs to support their family and their need to drive fast.\n\nHe didn\u2019t have a chop-top \u201932 - In the day they just sawed off the top. Hell no, I was born with the whole canteen!' \u00a0\r\n\r\nTo an outsider, Teddy had an enviable life of limitless wealth and endless parties, but he was bored with his empty, shallow existence and was drowning in the vanity of Californian high society. Except for the body, the cost to build this is pretty much the same as say a less desirable '41 Plymouth sedan. No matter what car the equipment goes into, the running gear, instruments, upholstery, window glass, wiring and paint are going to cost you the same whether you build a car that is in high demand (like this '32 Ford) or you build something bulky and of poor design. When I was about 15 (year 1966), we went on a family vacation from Montana to the big city of Los Angeles. My dad was a huge Mercedes fan and we visited what was the country's most respected Mercedes restoration shop. The owner, who was constantly featured in the car magazines my dad got - told ME that it cost no more to paint a Mercedes 300 SL than it would to invest the same quality paint job on a Model A Ford. Obviously, one's ROI would be much greater when investing in the 300 SL. As a teen but having grown up in the family machine and fab shop plus farming. I had a lot of skills, but I can't claim to have engineered the V12 to V8 conversion. A hot rod rag of the '50's, Car Craft, I think, about the size of Readers Digest, ran a three issue how to do it on the conversion. It even printed a true size drawing to stick down to the point plate to drill and tap for high rpm magneto points in the right position. Even with the design help it was a difficult task and could possibly be done with home shop hand tools. But a drill press to drill the holes and guide the tap straight was helpful. there was tricky soldering on the wire terminal caps also. The instructions were to hold an 8 lobe breaker can up to a bench grinder and grind off every other lobe. Having a lathe and tool post grinder I was able to do that step much more carefully and neatly. Since my street rod was '34 Ford pickup based, I would sometimes tow our '39 Ford based roundy pounder to the local track and swap my distributor onto the \"race car\" then back to mine for the tow home. \r\nThen one of my fellow nerds in high school, who became an electronic engineer, built a vacuum tube based ignition which preceded MSD by decades. All the points had to do was tell the magic box when to fire. Only mechanical wear on the points. I built one for my '50 with the top mounted round distributor. Good times, good friends. I was barely old enough to drive. When I was not in school, I drove a lumber delivery truck for my Dad in our family construction business. I was 17 at the time. \n\nOne day, while out on a delivery, I saw a Titian Red Deuce Coupe for sale at a gas station. It had a warmed up '48 Merc flathead coupled to a '39 Ford transmission. The Coupe was full-fendered, not chopped, with 16\" wire wheels and I was completely smitten.\n\nWith savings I'd accumulated from the salary my Dad paid me I was able to buy the car. It needed a lot of minor work but eventually we were able to make it road worthy and it passed state inspection.\n\nThe Deuce served as my college commuter car for two years but because I was inclined to blow transmissions with regularity while street racing, Dad insisted I sell the car.\n\nI often wonder where the car might be now, or even it has survived. Tom worked for a number of years on the Bill Harrah Collection in Reno. Someone described Bill Harrah as the first 'Jay Leno'. One of the first true collectors who shared his passion with the world. Tom was responsible for those cars. I made a segue into the boating world and was working on a 1938 Chris-Craft runabout. I was struggling to find elusive pre-war era parts and a mutual friend gave me Tom\u2019s number. So, technically, we first met over the phone. As luck would have it, he had the parts I needed and invited me to his house that Saturday to pick them up. While showing me around his shop, we quickly discovered our mutual adoration for flatheads and a decades long friendship was born. I cherish the great times, shared projects and memories made over these last 28 years.\u00a0\r\n\r\nUpon first impression, it\u2019s clear that Tom is a genuinely good person, let alone highly skilled at his craft. But his soft-spoken and self-effacing demeanor are a seeming contradiction to his remarkably storied career.
