Lots of folks seem to use the same adjective that came to mind when I first saw it: cool Jeep dude! I first saw it in my neighborhood on a snowy January afternoon parked on top of a giant pile of snow. I struck up a conversation with the guy representing it and learned that he was selling it on behalf of his old coworker. As I remember it was his friend which had worked at United as a mechanic with him; his friend and son owned about 7 or more CJs, but the father and son had passed away and the family was looking to sell the land and the Jeeps that were parked on it. My neighbor was going through them trying to help sell them off. \r\n\r\nI took it for a quick spin around the culdesac (because it's lifted it feels like you're driving on a safari), slept on it for the night, and decided to purchase it. A local shop did the front brakes (pads and rotors) and new u-joints as the steering was pretty sloppy. After driving it around some more I ended up replacing the steering dampner which further improved its handling. Aside from that it's been a great vehicle and did not require any other work aside from regular fuild changes. It's a hoot to drive in the snow and I've taken it on a few local dirt roads but nothing too serious that an AWD car couldn't handle. I mostly use it on small trips around town and to the local hardware store, especially in inclement weather. I don't know why but it just feels right to drive it in the snow.\r\n\r\nI'll try to grab a video of a cold start as well as a drive at speed to show how it handles.\r\n\r\nIf you have any questions about it feel free to ask. The child seat's been in there from early on, my daughter absolutely loves the \"Jeepy\" and it's her go-to car for any trip, much to her dismay when we have to take our other cars (that can fit our family of 4 and 2 dogs).\r\n\r\nNote, the following is a bunch of pontification and rambling about the Jeep and my thoughts on it. The car was assembled, and driven for some unknown miles, a few years before I was born. It \"came to life\" I'm guessing somwhere in the midwest, probably the Toledo Ohio factory, while I came kicking and screaming somewhere on the far side of Europe, under a completley different social and political system. There's little to no digital technology on it, almost everything but the tape player/radio is analog and \"just works\". I think a lot about the father/son owners that worked on it and drove it, I know very little of them but I get to use thing \"thing\" that they must have toiled on and hopefully gotten to enjoy, and that makes me happy. The front windshield looks very old, I can't tell if it's original or not, the markings on it are very faint and I can barely make out the manufacturer, but the little pittings tell a story of many miles and many years. I don't know why but I think about its age as I ride around with the windows down feeling the wind and getting pelted in the arm by a random bug every now and then. That thing has diverted many a bugs and rocks and debree, possibly for longer than I've been alive. The engine needs no introduction, I'm guessing it's because of the gearing but it feels surprisingly torquey and zips along great as it has for many miles and many years, it just works. The few parts I've wanted to get for it (pcv valve, oil cap) are readily available and cheap at NAPA. It makes me pine for a time when things just felt like \"they just worked\" and if they didn't you could fix them yourself. I know it's a mirrage and that memory and nastalgia paint a rosier picture than reality, but I can't help but feel a bit of that when I drive it.\r\n\r\nAlright, enough of that, I'll try to get some videos up soon. Reason for selling: can\u2019t fit the whole family comfortably, especially 2 kid seats in the back bench. I can\u2019t justify having a 3rd \"fun car\" in the stable, and our plan is to trade the CJ for a 4 door Wrangler.\r\n\r\n2. Top priority project you\u2019d take on to keep it going for the next 5 years: the majority of work I\u2019ve done on it has been preventative maintenance and that\u2019s what I\u2019d keep doing over the next 5 years. Maintenance wise I would change the front diff fluid and the transmission fluid, not because anything is wrong with them but because I don\u2019t know when they were last changed and it\u2019s cheap insurance. The valve cover weeps a bit of oil, so if that bothers you I\u2019d reseat it. Upgrade wise I\u2019d put Blistein shocks on it because they\u2019ve been great on my other vehicles.\r\n\r\nOne of the hinges on the topper is showing some rust, while this is common it does kind of bother me and at some point will need to be addressed.\r\n\r\n3. Would it make a reliable commuter: I\u2019ve had 0 issues with it and it\u2019s never left me stranded or given me any worries but it's been my fun car and I\u2019ve been able to enjoy it when I want to and put up with the quirks of 1980s technology (no AC). I love running errands with the CJ because it adds a little fun to mundane destinations and tasks and my kids absolutely adore the car.
