From that experience, I do not think anyone is suggesting that it cannot achieve 70mph - just that, if driven at similar speeds for any length of time on a road that is less than perfect, it can be a bit uncomfortable. From my experience this is due to the short wheel-base more than anything else. \n\nIf you're like me, and I know I am, you always wear your seatbelt. So, when I would take this for a 30-minute or more drive in the SF Bay Area up/down HWY 880 or 101 for any length of time, the horribleness of both those roads would have me being repeatedly \"tossed between the seatback and the seatbelt\" so to speak. Base model with zero options, not even a radio. They even sprayed the undercoating on it and the finance company wouldn't cover that little amount so the dealer \"ate\" it. Very short gearing and IIRC hwy mpg was 29 and city was 28. I lived in Louisiana, so basically sea level, and mine topped out at 65, downhill with a tail wind. In '89 I took a job overseas and left the Samurai with my folks. My idiot 14 y.o. kid brother decided to drive it one day after school and ran off the road in a sweeping curve (inside the curve no less) and hit a power pole. He wasn't hurt from the accident, but dad made him call me overseas and 'fess up. He explained the accident then ruined his apology by telling me sincerely that I was lucky because it would have been worse if he wasn't such a good driver. The writing was on the wall because he has wrecked nearly every car he has ever driven. I remember it cost me $798 to fix it. He wasn't old enough for even a learner's permit. Dad drove it quite a bit. I found out he towed two cars with it even though it had pretty much a zero tow rating. I let my sister drive it for a time after she got divorced, but it had no A/C and the choppy ride made her boobs hurt so while she was grateful, she wasn't \"grateful\" and quickly found other transportation. By the time I left my job and returned home the poor 'Zuki had 114K miles and was pretty tired. I brought it 1500 miles to where I live now and less than a year later I was T-boned in a mall parking lot by a full size pickup. Pushed in the passenger side over a foot. It still drove though. I sold it to a guy needing the drive train for his Samurai. The altitude here is 4500 feet and I still see Samurai's running down the highway at 80 mph. Makes me wonder what mods they have. \nThey can be a lot of fun, just take their limitations into account. They really are much more suited for off-road than on. All Japanese import 4x4's had trouble with Smog requirements, in particular California. Under the hood are a sea of little hoses going all over the place. The Carb is a combo of mechanical and electronic switching valves, so be sure you know where you are going when you R and R. The trick is the previously mentioned Weber conversion...simple and reliable. Not approved for California. The holy grail is the late fuel injected models. Troubles are over. Can't really compare a Sammy to a CJ. A Sammy with a winch can pull itself out of anything. A CJ with a winch can pull others out of trouble. The big advantage off-road with the Samurai is its size. These little guys can forge streams and go up mountain trails that no other 4x4 on the planet can do. Due to the short wheel base, they are a bit risky on the lean. I bought my unmolested 87 tin top, 8 years ago, as an alternative to a side by side, to putter around some investment farm land that I bought. After a year or so, my son took it off to college since it would fit into any of the tiny parking spaces left open around campus where normal sized vehicles wouldn't fit. After he graduated I got it back and basically use it to bum around in when I don't want to take one of my nicer cars out. It traversed hood-high flood waters, has gone off road and survived a college kid. It now has 150K miles and is still on the original drive train. I have replaced belts and hoses, and other wear items and it has been totally reliable. If you keep the stock tire diameter (the gearing doesn't change) the motor will handle flat country just fine ( I live in Louisiana). Mountains and tall tires quickly overwhelm these engines. Yokohama Geolanders in a wider size will do wonders for this truck's performance compared to the old turned in white walls that are on the Sami that is being auctioned. My tiny AC works pretty well, but I wonder how well it would funtion in this soft top version. I was planning to do a 1.6 tracker swap when I burned out this engine but despite constant full throttle use. the 1.3 just keeps on going. These are unique and fun toys to have. Based on these, I'll add a few more thoughts:\n\nNo Samurai's ride is comparable to a Rolls Royce, for sure. It's not even a used Civic. Or a modern coil-sprung Wrangler TJ. But, considering its short wheel base, leaf springs and proper 4WD bones, I'm surprised it is as reasonable as it is. I've found it to be very sensitive to tire pressure--dash label calls for just 20/20psi F/R unladen, or 20/26psi loaded. I run about 23 and it seems pretty happy there. I misread the other label and put 35 in at first. That was painful! \n\nFor flat towing, as @perray correctly notes, the OM calls out to put transfer case in N, and shifter in 2, then stop every 200 miles, rev the engine for a few minutes. The PO advised me of the same (OM page was bookmarked). I've only ever driven it under its own power though and just stored the tow rig in the garage (it's easy to detach).\n\nCarb is the original Hitachi unit and is sorted. Early on in my ownership, I cleaned the carb and checked all the vacuum lines and replaced the little vent tube, the latter of which seemed to be the cause of a hesitation. With a new timing belt, valves adjusted and complete ignition tune up, everything is now operating exactly on spec, and it starts easily, idles smoothly and responds well. CA is pretty serious on emissions inspection/testing; this easily breezed right though.\n\nI usually just leave the Bikini top on all the time--it's a great balance between shade and al fresco motoring, and it does not flap about in the wind. When coupled with a little heat or A/C, it's good year round (here, at least). Soft top is back on it now--it makes more noise at higher speeds, but you can change them out in a few minutes. If you wanted, you can even take it all off--the tops, the roll hoop, the doors and fold down the windshield for the whole Safari experience.\n\nThere certainly are a lot of proven mods and potential available for those that want to go that route--but I wanted to keep it stock, especially considering how rare that is and the fantastic original condition that this one is in. But I get it. To each their own.\n\nThis car has been my 'family convertible', as the others only have 2 seats. See, I'm a responsible Dad. Yeah, take that Consumer Reports! The other one is a hard top that a non hunting friend had, when it no longer would pass state inspection he traded it to us for a stick of deer bologna. This one is going for waaaay to much money to ever be enjoyed as they should, zzoming around the woods on atv trails. These things will go through things so narrow other SUVs cant.
