I\u2019ve long admired Aston Martins, particularly when I was very young and my parents took me to see Goldfinger at a movie theatre back in Rochester, NY. The DB5\u2019s and in particular the DB4\u2019s are astonishingly beautiful. I remember seeing an especially incredible DB4 Series V Vantage at Heritage Classics on Santa Monica in L.A. back about 20 or so years ago in Sage Green over Pearl leather and my heart skipped a beat. It was an beautiful car and at the time around $65,000. I wished I had the wherewithal then to get that car! As a teen back around 1977, at the San Francisco International Auto Show, the Aston\u2019s presented by British Motors (the iconic SF British car dealer) were roped off, but the very nice sales gentleman let this gangly teen in to have a guided tour of the magnificent Aston Marin V8\u2019s on display. Things like this for people who love cars, can indelibly remain in one\u2019s mind for a lifetime. So, in seeing this wonderful DB4 in my favorite color combination, brought back the memories of these cars from my past. That said, any car, especially a 60+ year old one, is going to need an engine refresh at some point to keep it on the road. I think the key to mitigating any downside to undertaking that process has a lot to do with the firm selected to perform a result that is sensitive to the originality of the car. Folks like the esteemed Kevin Kaye Restorations (KKR), vintage Aston Martin specialists, come to mind as such a firm. \r\n\r\nI would also point out that the Best in Show award winner at Pebble yesterday was a 90 year old Bugatti racer still running along in a very spritely fashion. It had undergone a color change, albeit by a King, and I'm certain the engine had to have been refreshed over its life span. First ever Survivor Class Best in Show. The car had an engine built to \"4.2-Litre Specification\", and \"fitted with three Weber 45 DCOE sidedraft carburetors\".\r\n\r\nhttps://www.goodingco.com/lot/1960-aston-martin-db4-series-ii-1/\r\n\r\nC) I have not studied the different valuations between the different series DB4s, but perhaps I should. There is a difference in the data, but at such small sample sizes, it may not give any meaningful insight. The Series II 5-year average is about $418k and the Series II is $363k.\r\n\r\nThird, in my opinion, the engine upgrade and overdrive are positive modifications that make the car a better driver. Perhaps not so much for the modest extra power, but extra torque is always good, and so is the overdrive. In my view, these cars are already adequate performers in stock form, but a little extra \"go\" is still welcome. I would personally see it as a slight plus in value, but I am not sure that \"the market\" sees it that way.\r\n\r\nFourth, I do not think there is any devaluation due to the engine modifications. \"Vantage spec\", seems a common upgrade. Since there are so few of these trading at a particular point in time, it is hard to compare the stock vs. upgraded vs. factory Vantage, since seldom are there multiple cars trading within narrow time period. My anecdotal observation is that there is little difference and that a given car's overall condition is more important. But that is purely my speculation and not based on data.\r\n\r\nFifth, @cybergeek, I think your current bid is in the ballpark of the average or median prices I found for the past five years for all series of DB4s per my comment on the recent DB5 auction (there is a link in my earlier comment to this auction). @silverarrowcarsltd (The Seller) is a highly reputable seller who has a solid record of presenting cars in excellent condition, so a result above the average would not be unexpected. That said, a visit to see the car, or a PPI by a marque expert, would be prudent for any old car. \r\n\r\nSixth, I really should take another look at just DB4s and factor out special cars like the \"GT\" model that drive up the median and average prices quite a bit. I think I would have chosen red carpets for this build, but that is an owner's choice!\r\n\r\nPersonally, I don't think the 4.0 L engine size detracts from the value at all, The current DB5 I am restoring now (the '64 New York Show car) has been enlarged to 4.2L. This is a pretty common upgrade and RS Williams in the UK (a noted Aston Martin Specialist) has been doing 4.2 upgrades for a VERY long time. I have the correct triple HD8 carbies on it now, but we also have a set of make believe Webers (fuel injection). BTW, It was Fiesta red with black trim piped red. It must have looked like a bordello! Now Silver Birch, with black trim piped black. Fiesta red just is not a very flattering color on a DB5 IMHO!\r\n\r\nEven Kevin Kay modifies these cars with modern 5 speed gearboxes (tremec) as the original ZF gearboxes require special tools to even get apart. We sent the gearbox for our car to the UK for rebuild. Kevin Kay told us to put a Tremec in it... On classic-com, the convertibles have their own charts/pages.\r\n8) I decided to leave the data as reported by classic-com, but the correct approach would have been to delete the two convertibles and recalculate. I just don't treasure having to manually scrape the data to do those calculations. Sorry! [But see \"10\" below.]\r\n9) The convertibles were high priced. The top price was one of the convertibles ($1,276,756 and the other was $721,692).\r\n10) Based on a VERY rough estimate, I think the two convertibles push up the average by around $21k, so perhaps the correct average is more like $364k.\r\n\r\n@cybergeek\r\nYour kind words are much appreciated. I hope the above is useful, but note my caveats about the quality of the data, and my \"short-cut\" estimate for the full 56 cars. Also, there surely are a number of these cars that quietly changed hands from collector to collector, often via brokers who know to stay silent. So there is that...\r\n\r\nAs to the subject car, I think it is stunning and likely worth a fair premium compared to the averages in my data samples. Changing hands in the Vancouver area being continually serviced and driven. The car stayed in the West its entire life being shown at local shows until our client purchased it in 2008. The condition of the car was excellent ( as shown in the pictures #309 ) but deserved a full restoration. \r\n\r\nWe have to say, this is one of the absolute best classic cars we have ever driven.
