In picture # 64, the full chrome moulding at the bottom of the dashboard further supports this, as an auto box car had a gap in the center of this moulding for the sliding gear lever and its black plastic indicator. The holding side piston is often too tight or if its brackets were ever moved during restoration- remember this is a replacement trunk cover and there cars were \"man made\" so who can be sure the weld was exactly- I mean exactly- at the same distaance? If it is then too long by a few mm where the piston is secured at either end: pop out can happen easily. Talking about money in such a case is risky and delicate. Cost is variable depending on what is expected in the end: revert to being totally authentic with a Moss gearbox, without overdrive in this case, or upgraded as said below by @pmurtskcus. If you start with a new Tremec 5 speed- a good idea- you know that important cost from the start. Then add all that needs to be replaced- some items presuming they were also changed, removed or altered when the conversion was made: the speedometer is different, wiring altered ( may be only modifications could do-unsure), drive shaft: was it replaced? or shortened to fit? Also, the diferential on this car is a 3.54:1, same luckily for auto or 4 speed, while the 4 speed O/D were 4.09:1, which would be a great enhancement on a Tremec for cruising but these likely not so easy to find second hand. Then the interior: the metal center console currently hidden or removed and discarded? then finding a proper stick shift. What else? \r\n\r\nFinally, one needs to know of a reputable shop to do it if you cannot do it yourself. \r\nLabor costs often is twice as much as the parts, although the high cost of the 5 speed box could tamper that ratio....but still significant $$ altogether.\r\n\r\nPreviously, a comment was made about the dashboard.
