I purchased the car in May of 1990 and had the motor rebuilt in December of that year. At the time of the motor rebuild the mileage was 82,284. The mileage on the car is therefore 111K and the miles on the rebuilt motor is about 29K. At the 109K mile mark the timing belts,driving belts, timing belt tensioner bearing and hoses were replaced and the compression checked. These are fun cars, not just to show and drive, but also to work on. The days of absolutely having to throw money at a Ferrari shop for preventative maintenance are over. If you are decent with a wrench, and determined, there is now so much information on FerrariChat/YouTube that it is very possible to maintain a 308 yourself, in your own garage. \n\nThis was not always the case - only as far back as the 1990's, Ferrari maintenance was a mystery, a kind of dark art practiced by pricey mechanical gods inhabiting garages with floors so clean you could fork spaghetti off them. In those dark ages, conventional wisdom held that owners should hurry their prized possession to an overpriced specialist technician at the slightest hint of trouble, or even for basic scheduled maintenance. This practice gave rise to an attitude that persists even today, but is now mostly out-of-date, that old Ferrari's are trouble, and one must have deep pockets to own and maintain one. The emphasis here is on old, because new Ferrari's are indeed like any new car, containing about a thousand computer chips. Many of which could leave you stranded, more or less dependent on proprietary diagnostics, then perhaps waiting for a shipment from Taiwan.\n\nConsider this, a Ferrari 308 has no computer chips. No power steering, no ABS, no traction control. None of it. If original, the ignition timing is managed by mechanical points in distributors. If the points get fouled, they can be cleaned with sandpaper or a nail file to get you home. On a GT4 the spark plugs are easily removed for inspection. The fuel is delivered by weber carburettors, which are designed to be easily cleaned, and the mixture quickly adjusted by flathead screwdriver. There is also very little plastic under the hood; the entire car was assembled by hand (even the engine), so all the nuts, bolts, screws and fasteners and most other components are made of metal or aluminium, and accessible by humans for disassembly and maintenance. Compare that to a modern car, where so much robot assembled plastic under the hood will become brittle after 10 \u2013 15 years of heat.\n\nIt is true that mechanical ignition, carburetors and gated shifters are woefully inefficient by today's standards. But the same argument probably holds for internal combustion engines in general. In reality, if what you want is efficient, sterile, blinding fast ride that doesn\u2019t seep oil onto your garage floor, your probably better off in a Tesla (until Taiwan goes offline) \u2026\n\nBut back to the cam belts, surely a foreboding corner of Ferrari 308 lore. In reality the DIY is not too bad. With a jack stand, set of sockets, determination and patience you are well on your way to feeling like Nikki Lauda\u2019s F1 mechanic between test drives.
