I seem to remember a number of different bottles of orphan barrel whiskeys being opened and consumed, and a kind of round robin \"who's car should we work on now?\" conversation. When it came to my car, our host decided that I wouldn't be leaving with stock EML/DME chips so he flashed a couple of chips with Alpina and Dinan codes and proceeded to install them. Fog from the whiskey that day prevents me from remembering which chips went where, though perhaps I can round up someone with better memories of that day to chime in. Definitely the performance of the car changed notably after that day. Fortunately for me, all the chips cost me was a bottle of bourbon...unfortunately I can't recall what is what, and since they were flashed onto unlabeled chips, the only way to tell for sure is to remove them and compare the codes to authentic Alpina and Dinan chips.\r\n\r\nLong story to say I can't say for sure what chips have been installed, but they are definitely not stock, and the car is noticeably peppier than it used to be.\r\n\r\n\r\nRegarding the rear struts, the recommendation was made by a mechanic during the June 2022 service. He kept a meticulous log book on it, like an airplane, and I could tell you when a headlight went out, when it was replaced, and when it was washed. He would note and add oil when it was down a pint or half pint (!). I had a membership to BMWCCA that was helpful with repair information. In spite of all of this, when something needed repair it was unnecessarily complicated and costly. Replacing the thermostat required removing the radiator, one or two of the front grills, and replacing the remote part with 5 hoses. You\u2019ve heard of cars that nickel and dime you. This one did it in increments if $20. Literally. I learned the hard way that BMWs don\u2019t age well and decided to buy a Volvo Turbo. I had to drive the car from San Antonio to Dallas in 100* temps with the windows down and heater on to keep it from overheating. The temp gauge would creep up to the red but if I honked the horn or flashed the lights it would jump and then drop low. I was told the gauge built up electrical resistance and that this was the fix. After a while it didn\u2019t work. Enough was enough. It was a fun car to drive. You can see the vehicle speed is stable at 40 mph over this period.\r\n\r\nCracked interior trim can be seen in photos 106 (left side of the vents, these ones are cracked in pretty much every single 8),118 (where the rear passenger side seatbelt comes out), and 121 (the plastic trim piece at the entrance to the trunk).
