I could not wait to take it out on the road for photos.\r\n\r\nWow\u2026 what a disappointment as I could barely drive it. It overheated constantly and my foot felt like it was detached from my leg after just a few miserable minutes in traffic.\r\n\r\nThose in the know told me if you want a Cobra to drive on the street, go for a rack and pinion, 289. When one came along in short order sure enough, it was far more fun, civilized and tame enough for street use. Very quickly we had not one but two of the original Cobra Daytona Coup\u00e9s come our way but while historically, incredibly important, they were just noisy and no fun unless you were on a track.\r\n\r\nThen we had our first early Cobra. A very plain 260 cubic inch, worm and sector steering car and it was absolutely delightful and ever so much fun on the street, although with the heavy engine and early type steering, the handling was a bit off.\r\n\r\nFinally we had our first AC ACE-Bristol Roadster. I was expecting it to be slow and lacking any fun factor. I could not have been more wrong and as with many vehicles built, modified, updated and changed over a long production run, the earliest versions were often the most fun, pure and enticing.\r\n\r\nI have known this particular AC ACE-Bristol Roadster for more than 20 years and while I had asked many times, the owner was always reluctant to part company with it.\r\n\r\nWhen he finally relented, I told him the truth\u2026 \u2026don\u2019t sell it. It\u2019s the best, you will never, ever find another to replace it.\r\n\r\nA change in his collection sees it here for sale for the first time in nearly twenty years. Pay attention my fellow BaTFans, this is the real deal, a genuine, original example, matching numbers and full records and history from the moment it was ordered to the present.\r\n\r\nThere will be much more to share but wifey has Chicken Parmesan on the table and well\u2026 priorities as they say, so I will be back here later to assist in anyway needed.\r\n\r\nMy very best to everyone so have fun and let the show begin!\r\n\r\nBill Noon", "likes": 43, "timestamp": 1717364427, "type": "comment"}, {"id": 14608821, "authorName": "Symbolic_International (The Seller)", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/symbolic_international/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "AC Ace-Bristol Register head, Keith Lessiter was kind enough to provide the copies of the original order details for this particular example.\r\n\r\n1956 was the first year the new Bristol, Type 100D, 120bhp competition engine was available for the AC ACE Roadster and engine number \"519 100D\" was fitted new to this vehicle and remains there to this day.\r\n\r\nThe block itself carries the original casting date of \"4May56\" or May 4th, 1956 which further confirms the originality of the engine.\r\n\r\nThe AC records confirm it was ordered new by AC Imports Inc., out of 8 Alden Avenue, Valley Stream, NY on behalf of their client, Mr. Peter Dechart, a very well known early member and later, life-time member of the Sports Car Club of America.\r\n\r\nDetails on his life can be seen here:\r\n\r\nhttps://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/santafenewmexican/name/peter-dechert-obituary?id=16515879\r\n\r\nThe car was originally completed in the one of one color, Polychromatic Pale Fawn, which is closest to the 1963 Corvette Color, Saddle Tan. The interior was black leather and the soft top and tonneau cover were finished in black.\r\n\r\nThe AC records further confirm the fitting of optional Girling front disc brakes, making this likely one of the earliest examples so fitted as they did not become a regular official option until 1957. They were likely installed by AC knowing that the owner intended to compete with the car in a variety of events in the States.\r\n\r\nThe car was completed in and released for shipping on July 25th, 1956.\r\n\r\nDechert entered the car in the 9th Annual International Sports Car Grand Prix of Watkins Glenn on September 15th, 1956 where he finished a very impressive 7th Overall.\r\n\r\nIt appears that Dechert only raced in just the one event and never raced the car again until finally selling it in March of 1963 to Dale Copeland of 1330 Potomac, Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland. \r\n\r\nThe car was then acquired in the late 1980s by Ron Leonard and sent to well known AC Specialist, Bill Murry for restoration with the engine and gearbox being rebuilt by Colorado, Master-Mechanic, Mike Dopudja.\r\n\r\nLeonard ran into financial difficulties and fellow Colorado resident and classic car enthusiast, Tom Horan purchased and completed the project in 1990.\r\n\r\nHoran ran the car several times in the Colorado Grand before selling it to another well known collector, Bill Jacobs.\r\n\r\nJacobs also enjoyed the car in several Colorado Grand events and other shows and rallies before being talked out of ownership in 2005 by a long-term client and friend who over the next near 20 years, drove the car just over 1,200 miles\r\n\r\nDuring his owners, the car has received lavish attention by Cavallo Motorsport, Chris Dugan at Dugan Enterprises, Motion Products and Rare Drive, Inc., in East Kingston, New Hampshire. There are receipts and records for well over $100,000.\r\n\r\nAfter being asked to assist with the sale, I put 70 very fun miles on the car and the only thing that went wrong was the second sweep hand fell of the dash mounted rally clock. Both timers still work however.\r\n\r\nIn preparation for the upcoming sale on Bring-A-Trailer the car was sent to James Millar for full services, safety checks and compression test which came out drop-dead perfect on all cylinders from 155 to 157 psi.\r\n\r\nI have had quite a few of these over the past 30 years, the majority of which had mystery history and a variety of changes and modifications, usually centered around replacement engines, gearboxes, brakes, gauges, steering wheels etc...\r\n\r\nI have been watching this one closely for the past twenty years, hoping one day the owner would finally let it go and hopefully let me sell it for him. Ron Leonard never owned this car. He had a sister car to mine that was in Bill Murray's shop at the same time and was painted Mercedes Midnight Blue just like my car. Ron was very helpful with parts during the cars restoration. Though I knew Bill long before this car, the man that owned the car had been the one to start the restoration with Bill. When he had to sell, Bill contacted me, as he knew I was looking for a Grand car. In order to make the 1992 Grand, Mike Dopudja took on the engine and gearbox, as Bill was too busy with the rest to get it all done by September.\r\nI drove the car on 14 Grands. I sold the car to Bill Jacobs and missed it so much that I bought it back two years later. Then he missed it so much, I sold it back to him two years later with the handshake that I would get the first call if he sold it again. After I heard Bill had sold it to someone else, I still missed it, so I bought the Ron Leanord sister car! There is no better seller.\r\n\r\nI just completed the California Mille in a Bristol powered 1957 AC Ace (AEX 142 with 100D2 motor 889) and then DROVE it cross country from CA to my home in Maryland on the old Lincoln Highway route. It never failed to start or run, and it made the entire trip without incident. These cars are plenty fast, with neutral handling and light steering that loads up as cornering forces build. With the correct Michelin X in 5.5x16 they are super progressive and a real joy to drive. And, just about everyone on the Mille commented how good the car sounded. They're exceptional.\r\n\r\nI was only passed twice on the Mille - by a 300sl, and by a 250 TdF. In both cases, I was running at top speed (6k RPM in 4th gear) when passed. They're not the longest legged cars, but they're wonderful event mounts and eligible for everything.\r\n\r\n@jerichomtn These car were well known for their success in the Mille Miglia and Le Mans when new - they'd be important historically and well known with out without the Shelby connection (though it certainly doesn't hurt).\r\n\r\n@Mike_Breinin The value of these cars (Bonhams sold one for $513k in 2022 at Monterrey) is not because they are a cheaper Cobra substitute, or their relation to Shelbys; but, rather because even at that price they provide access to super exclusive events including the CA Mille, Colorado Grand and the Mille Miglia in Italy. It's a (relative) bargain for something that grants so much access.\r\n\r\nTL;DR Great seller and great reliable cars. That was Carlos Monteverde and what a gentlemen. It was 0738/TR, the one we got from Adrian Hamilton shortly after trading the Le Mans winning 962 for another 250TR, s/n 0748/TR.\r\n\r\nCarlos kept it for many years but it now resides with Les Wexner. Funny enough, while Carlos no longer has the TR, he has the Le Mans winning 962\u2026 Interesting how things go full circle sometimes. I believe he also has our old Le Mans winning 956 as well as our 936 and of course our old Le Mans winning 917K. He has quite the collection of special Le Mans winning Porsches for sure!\r\n\r\nI am not sure @pjbowman but I suspect Bill Murray from the Shelby American Collection Museum or another former owner may have swapped the hinge out as they are prone to fatigue and cracking. It has always been my absolute pleasure to try and assist and so glad to hear you are still having fun with the Bristol Roadster.\r\n\r\nFrom the moment AC starting fitting the higher tuned Type 100D engine that produced excellent, \"long-stroke\" torque and an honest 120bhp, these became true racers in their class and the overall wins started piling up quickly.\r\n\r\nWhat many forget is how far back the engine is set in the massive, tubular frame, well behind the front suspension and the handling is crisp and precise and while the turning circle is not great, these cars are ultra-stable all all speeds until max revolution are reached in top gear.\r\n\r\nThe original owner of this one never raced before in his life and easily finished 7th Overall at the 1956 Watkins Glenn Grand Prix for Sports Cars. A veteran of World War II, Dechert served in the 69th Infantry Division in France, Belgium, and Germany. While he was Staff Sergeant, Chief of Division Artillery Survey Section, his section was cited as the best of its kind in the US Army (1944). He was later appointed to Division Artillery Headquarters Intelligence. Peter taught himself photographic and darkroom techniques in his pre-teen years and published his first photograph in Leica Magazine at the age of 15. He continued to make photographs until the last week of his life. His work appeared in Business Week, Exploration, Life, Playboy, Today's Health, and many other publications. One favorite was Sports Car magazine; Peter briefly raced sports cars, and was a proud lifetime member of the Sports Car Club of America. The American Society of Magazine Photographers (now the American Society of Media Photographers) honored Peter Dechert by naming him an honorary lifetime member. Peter's photographs have been shown in a variety of galleries, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to his own Camera West gallery in Santa Fe. During his time with the School of American Research (now SAR) he studied innovative techniques for using photography in archaeological research, including oblique aerial photography. He contributed a section on Communication, Photography, and the Archaeologist to SAR's publication Photography in Archaeological Research. As founder of the Southwest Foundation for Audiovisual Resources, he documented many Indian artists at work. An internationally-renowned expert in camera history, he was best known for his books Canon Rangefinder Cameras 1933-68 and Olympus Pen Single-Lens Reflex Cameras. His monthly column for Shutterbug magazine offered a wealth of information about camera equipment old and new. His children remember many afternoons when snack time had to wait because he was hogging the toaster oven to cook black coating on some newly-created custom camera part. In all, he wrote 5 books and several hundred articles on cameras and camera equipment. Peter taught modern American poetry at the University of Pennsylvania and wrote many poems of his own. He served as the first President of the New Mexico Poetry Society. His poems have appeared in numerous anthologies and publications, including New Mexico Magazine, Sunstone Review, The American Pen, The American Bard, and more. In 2008 he published a collection of poems in book form, At Lagunitas, and gave many readings. He also wrote jazz music and played the clarinet and saxophone. He played in Germany after V-E Day with an army big band, then for his own pleasure for many years thereafter. In the 1970s he took to public performance again, as one of the first members of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and also with the Dechert/Trost Quartet. Peter believed strongly in contributing to his community. During his years as President of the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation he raised funds for Santa Fe's first cancer treatment center. He was a member of the vestry of the Church of Holy Faith from 1994 to 1997 and also served as a lay preacher, taking communion to parishioners at El Castillo, and to shut-in parishioners who could not attend church. At the time of his death he was President of the Residents Council at Brookdale Santa Fe, where he had lived for five years. He never stopped living, creating, and contributing. Peter Dechert survived his wife Phoebe Booth Dechert, who died in 2005. BTW, the worm is the same as RHD TR3. The LHD TR3 has the opposite hand thread on the worm. That would give a very exciting steering response LOL!\r\nI said the steering is disappointing not terrible. Every owner has an opinion. I just think it's not up to the rest of the car. My steering box is tight and works smoothly through the entire range. The steering just has a certain elasticity, non-linearity, imprecision compared to the R&P other cars. \r\nEarly cars had problems with the steering box mount failing. Reinforcements were added which mine has. I have a feeling there is a lack of stiffness in the structure leading to this steering feeling. It is what it is, a 1950's design.
