There are three custom-bodied Sixteens, two of which are on absolutely massive 154-inch chassis. \r\n\r\nThese were luxury cars built by racers--the brakes, for instance, are 30% larger than those on a Duesenberg J. The transmission is from Muncie Gear AKA General Motors, which was the finest synchromesh gearbox available at the time. Steering is by Ross and is light enough to be turned with one hand as long as the car is moving. Most Sixteens have 3.69 gearing, so they can cruise at 60 MPH without a lot of stress. The engine is entirely aluminum--even the pushrods are aluminum so that all the parts would expand at the same rate and heat wouldn't cause valve clearances to change. At idle, you have to check the oil pressure gauge to be sure it's still running--there's no sound and no vibration. They are superlative road cars and the engineering really is remarkable. \r\n\r\nI'm always amazed that a guy drew that engine on a piece of paper, handed it to another guy in the machine shop, and they created such a remarkable machine. No AutoCAD, no 5-axis CNC mill, no finite element analysis, just some insanely smart guys with vision. Not long after returning to the U.S. from Italy after designing briefly for Pininfarina in 1980, I drove up to NYC in hopes of getting an interview with one of these firms. It took a couple of tries but eventually I was able to meet with Henry Dreyfuss and Associates, and Teague (as WDT is called now), and Morrison Cousins and Assoc. who had the Gillette design account in 1981. Unfortunately, it was in the middle of the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, so both firms weren't hiring. Henry Dreyfuss was a morgue, with no work coming in. Design work at Teague was slow in coming in but it was in better economic condition to ride through the recession than Dreyfuss. After meeting with the head of human resources, Ms. S., I was assured that they were very much interested in hiring me, in particular me designing interiors for Boeing, of which Teague had the design contract, but I would have to wait till better economic conditions. Ms. S. over the next few years did call me just to let me know that they were still interested in me. Then the call came in the summer of 1986 that they were considering me to open and run a new Teague office in Washington, D.C. I was quite shocked, expecting an aircraft design job in Seattle but to be considered not only to head the design studio, but also run the entire office really surprised me! At the time I was working as an exhibit designer, and had just opened my Mid-Century Modern furniture and art gallery. I eventually met the entire executive staff but in the end they selected another designer. I was bummed but after hearing that someone else got the job.
