I've sold a few of them including a 180km 1980 MGB, and a 6,500km 06 Maserati. Lots of guys come a bit unglued, especially MG guys... The fact you couldn't drive it without devaluing it, all the deferred maintenance etc. etc. \r\n\r\nBut I look at it this way; A decent W126 might be $10k, an ultra-low mileage one double or triple that. Even if the seller hits it out of the park, it is still not a lot of money for a 'new' S Class Mercedes...\r\n\r\nOK it doesn't have a lot of cameras - but you can see out of it.\r\n\r\nIt doesn't have all the latest safety accident avoidance tech - but nothing to distract you from paying attention to driving the car...\r\n\r\nIt doesn't have cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing, variable ratio steering rack, rear wheel steering, electric power steering, etc. etc. - but anybody can fix it (the first time)\r\n\r\nI could go on... I recently purchased a 1984 300SD with 153,000 miles sight-unseen from Canada. The car looked and sounded good in all videos and photos provided by the seller and did not disappoint on arrival here in France where I presently live. Visually it was very good however the car seemed down on power with out of synch gear changes. Further investigation revealed turbo pressure that wouldn't blow a candle out which also effected the vacuum system controlling gear changes. Fortunately my mechanic enjoys working on analogue cars and after a month in his care with a turbo rebuild and various other tweaks it is now operating as it should. I have no regrets as I love these cars and it will still be chuntering along when I have exited this mortal coil. I find that the dealer kept replacing the ALDA sensor - a sensor that works off manifold pressure and ambient - senses the pressure difference to control what the turbo does (or something like that \u2013 it\u2019s been 25 years\u2026lol). The sensor kept getting clogged up with blow by... (from the EGR system).\n\nWell - While they kept replacing the valve and send my dad home. they did that several times but not replace (or even clean) the hose that fed the sensor from the intake manifold. That line was full of gunk and would foul a brand new sensor in no time.\n\nSo - I get a new sensor, new line and just clean or replace everything in that system. I also put a BB in the vacuum line that activates the EGR valve. :) \nCar ran like a sports car (diesel wise anyway) and I was very very happy. \n\nAbout year later I pick up my Dad from the airport \u2013 hand him the keys and have him drive. He doesn\u2019t want to.. but I insist.\nWe are not even out of the airport grounds and he looks at me and smiles\u2026 asking what engine I installed as this was not the car he gave me.\n\nWe had that car till almost 300,000 miles. Sold it as we got a 420SEL (W126). I don\u2019t really miss the gas car. Items such as coolant, fuel, and vacuum hoses; rubber suspension parts and bushings in the front and rear; drive-line flex discs and supports; and brake line hoses are all wear items. Whether mileage or age, after 38-years a vehicle (even with under 4K miles), would need to have these items replaced on principle before driving the car, period \u2013 just as the seller found it prudent to replace the tires with new rubber (not only as a selling point, but also as a safety point). It would be gutsy to bury an 85 mph speedometer in a car wearing 38-year old tires! Safety issues (not exhaustive), none the less.\r\n2.\tThe oil pressure at operating temperature showing just a little over 1 Bar, although passing, is not great and should be addressed. Is it a bad sender, bad gauge, bad o-rings on the oil filter housing canister, or something else (something more involved or problematic)? The oil pressure is technically \u201cpassing\u201d but it isn\u2019t something to be proud of. In academics a D is technically passing, too. What parent would tolerate their child getting a D when they are paying for prep school tuition? Engines are designed to be run, not sit for months, years, or decades on end with no or little use. When engines are run they lubricate vital parts to keep everything functioning as it should. This is a beautiful car and well-presented and the concern is that there could potentially be an issue with oil pressure that a trained professional would need to more closely inspect.\r\n\r\nMaybe the potential buyer doesn\u2019t care about any of these things because he/she plans on trailering the car from garage to car show and never drive it or maybe the buyer is prepared to invest in addressing these (and other) service items. The former is less likely the case with the dash being in the condition it is and the interior not faded/altered from UV exposure.
