I quickly discovered that once the chassis grounded you could lean it a bit more and slide it into corners. The trick was just about the time the bike was about to high side to pick the bike up, wrench the bars straight and wind the throttl full on. The first time my best friend saw this (his father and uncle raced in the mid-sixties) he said the shower of sparks was such that he thought I was crashing, after I did this several corners me in row he simply thought I was nuts. By the end of my time with it a few years later it, wild porting, 36mm carbs and Spec II pipes. Many of my friends rode Harleys and they could never quite wrap their heads on how a bike with half the displacement was so much faster. I did take it to the drag strip once and managed a 12.60 with it.\r\nI do have a friend that still has around 8 or 9 RDs. It started out stock, but ended up with a few thousands off the head, pipes with 8 holes drilled through the baffles, and various other modifications such as clubman bars. Used almost exclusively on the Sunday Morning Ride (yeah caps, there is only one), and AFM racing. Absolute rocket and a joy to ride. Remember burying the speedometer at 120 easily. The 350 class was huge in racing, with R5's, RD's, and some four strokes in the backfield. This was a great bike, not sure why I ever sold it. Member selling it to a first-time rider who had a friend test ride it and was wowed by the acceleration, not sure I ever mentioned the modifications, although I had reduced the main jets slightly to make it less of a handful. Following his recommendation, I removed the tiny D-battery-size coils from the RD and fitted two AMC automotive units. This allowed the plug gaps to be opened up from .025 to .040 (as I recall...this was over 40 years ago). What a dramatic improvement! \n\nAfter the changeover was developed (bigger condensers in series and eliminating shorts in the wiring) the bike would start on a half-kick, idle like a Rolex and putter around town like a newly tuned Vespa. Once the tach hit around 4K, HOLD ON!\n\nThe only other significant mod was to open up the airbox a little and de-carbonize the exhaust baffles on the barbecue grill...a story for another time.\n\n\nI was racing a buddy with a 1000 Laverda on a twisty road and keeping up pretty handily except that, if the RD came on the pipes while heeled over, a diagonal wheelie resulted and I had to ease off the throttle to bring the front wheel back down so I could steer again. \n\nOverall, I think I had three of these among my twenty or so odd bikes (some very odd!). \n\n\nVery best luck to buyer and seller. Taking off in 3rd gear at times because shifting 6 gears in 1974 was a drag. So was keeping down the front end. Not a cruiser like the shops are advertising. Rebuilding was fun and easy but that silver bike selling for 3.800 is like selling a restored vet for 5000. Congrads...
