If you don't like the roof paint it should peel right off and the light olive green paint underneath it was in nice shape. The car was already painted that green when I bought it. To paint the roof I built a lazy susan, set the car on it and had a friend spin the car while I laid on a platform hanging from the ceiling and dropped paint on the roof. Then I gave it a clear layer of automotive to preserve it. I believe the interior upholstery is original and the carpet is not. When I sold the current owner the car I included the wiper motor and a new replacement wiper cable. I was unable to get the old cable out and feared damaging the rest of the wiper mechanism so I just used Rain-X instead. My roof art tends to be more graphic than this one, but I kind of like this freestyle work too - something different. This one also has just the right amount of \"runoff\" into the rain gutters, probably not as easy to do as you might think. And if you don\u2019t like it, it\u2019s not difficult to repaint a Mini roof.\n\nSeeing the runoff reminded me of when I painted my first roof art on my Cooper. It\u2019s the Zig-Zag man in silver on a black roof with MOWOG in proper Algerian font, talk about a 60's look. That was 45 years ago when lacquer was the paint of choice. It took over a day to mask the pattern on the roof and I jacked up one side of the car as high as I could get it so I could shoot it all from one side. (Try holding a full DeVilbiss MGB one quart spray gun at arm\u2019s length and shoulder height for five minutes. No little sissy gravity feed guns back then! My first touch up gun was such a relief.) I did not want to color sand the silver overlay, as was the practice for lacquer, so I shot it fairly wet to get some gloss. First a quick shot of lacquer thinner to give the black a little bite, and then the silver. The silver had a ton of metallic in it and after I sprayed the entire thing I could see the metallic pigments migrating to the downhill side of the pattern. The paint wasn\u2019t running, it was just he metallic moving inside the paint. What to do, what to do? As fast as I could I dropped the car off the jacks, took them to the other side and jacked it up, hoping the metallic would migrate back before the thinner flashed out of the paint. Of course lacquer dries much faster than enamel. It was somewhat successful, but Smokin\u2019 Joe (named by a gas station attendant in Grand Junction) has always had a slight shadow effect due to the partially migrated silver metallic. No one has ever commented on the effect, and if anyone ever did I\u2019d claim it was intentional. With that experience and a few subsequent roof art projects I can appreciate that this tie dye roof took a little more planning and effort than you\u2019d expect.
