The bike has always been garaged, and for the last 4 years at least, I had the tires uninflated and the bike on stands, whch helps further. The CBX, especially the early models, 79 and 80, were some of the worst handling bikes of the era. They wobbled and tanked at speed and in turns. And unless you are on some deserted freeways in Texas or Montana or on the Autobahn in Germany, the KZ is the more impressive bike to ride. How many times do you get a bike over 8000 rpm in 3rd gear? The roll-on performance and low end torque of the KZ, which provides seat-of-the-pants feel is no match for the CBX. It is like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Dodge Viper. Why Honda made a 6-cylinder is still a little unclear and is being debated by real experts, not those who ride and drive behind keyboards. When Honda started the CBX development they were already working on the DOHC Fours, which materialized in 1979 as the CB750F and CB900F. Both motors have significant similarities to the 6-cylinder powerplant of the CBX. The 900F has the same bore. Piston rings are interchangeable. Some claim Honda rushed into the 6, because their \"spies\" learned about Kawasaki having a 6 in the oven.\r\nThe KZ1300 is clearly a naked \"Sport Tourer\" whereas the CBX is a period \"Superbike\".\r\nThe fact that it was ill-conceived is evidenced by the facts that it was outclassed quickly by the CB900F and its race-derivative, the CB1100R and it was changed into a \"Sport Tourer\" in 1981. Both the CBX and the KZ1300 have their distinct niches and shine in their respective areas. It is just not the case that the CBX beats the KZ1300 hands down in all aspects. The forst was silver, and the second had black 1980 bodywork. (1980 added a hatch on the top of the tail.) I loved them. Toured all over AK on the first one. I loved coming up on traffic, because the sound of 60 to 90 in third gear is a song that is worth listening to again and again. My first had a Russ Collins six into two. The other had a six into 1 with a Supertrapp. It was loud. Neither ever achieved 30 mpg, although the first one routinely got 29. Rode to Eugene from the North Oregon Coast with a guy on a Vincent Rapide. It was cool to be on two machines which had been the fastest thing around in their day, even if the time was very brief for the Honda. It was comfortable, and I thought it handled just fine. I have a '78 GS1000 Suzuki, which is a better all around bike, arguably, but the Presence of the X far exceeds that of the Suzuki. There are a lot of great memories for me associated with the early CBX. The styling and sound are fantastic.
