The M30 and M20 cars had Getrag 5 speeds behind them, with an overdrive. VIN decoder says this car came with an automatic transmission. It likely has just had a standard Getrag 5 speed swap done. None of the gearboxes from any of the M5x/S5x series engines can match up to the M30, without a modified bellhousing. The only M30 gearbox options that would be from an M is the S38 G280. Which has a much better 1st and 2nd gear ratio than the G260. The G260 was geared to produce a good 0-60 time (I recorded 6.5 in my '89 535i back when it was stock, 21 years ago), but then 3rd thru 5th are autobahn cruising gears. The 2-3 shift, no matter how well performed will always leave you below the power band in 3rd. The only fix is the G280 or a turbo (I went with the latter). Although the final drive is probably the original open 3.91, so that may help the acceleration a little.\r\n@Richard_McDonell The M30b35 was the final iteration of an engine started design in the 60s. As long as the seals are maintained, valves adjusted, and the oil changed, they'll live for ever. As for the chassis having 240k on it? I'd be way more worried about a low mileage car that sits, than a high mileage car that gets drive. Personally, my '89 535 crossed the 200k line in 2000, but has only done 35k in the last 19 years. The issues I have with my car come from it sitting. If it sits un-driven for more than 2-3 months, something goes wrong. Even with replacement parts. So these cars really need to be driven.\r\nI've also owned and driven multiple E34s, including a second 535i/5 built the same week as my long term car. It really comes down to maintenance in terms of how these cars feel. Not miles. I just drove a 110k 540/6 and while it was tight, it still didn't compare to my 235k 535i.\r\nIt has some decent upgrades. I really like the paint color. The bumpers aren't euro spec, the trim is euro spec, meaning that it doesn't have lit side reflectors. Interesting take on the center trim (from an M5) and the missing lower grill trim. Not sure why the vinyl seats are still there when there are so many parts cars out there with the way nicer Komfort seats. \r\nBesides undercarriage photos, there are no photos of the door cards. Unless the car has been updated with cards from a 95, they've either delaminated or separated. RPMs stayed within range, transmission shifted smoothly and pulled well between gears, and clutch engaged about half way. \n\nCar has had a recent oil change and coolant flush within the past 500 miles. Valves were adjusted, belts, hoses, and various seals were replaced within the past 1,500 miles for preventative maintenance. \n\nI would not hesitate to take it on a long drive.
