The auto trans cable has a spring at the lower end to prevent kinking. This car appears to have that cable. It\u2019s wrapped I suspect to block exhaust heat. The angle drive routes the speedo cable directly forward and over the trans crossmember, never crossing the exhaust. The link pin that breaks is there as a mechanical fuse, often breaking due to excessive load from the marginally functional Smiths speedometer. BTW, per the Volvo 1800 parts manual, the speedo cable used with the automatic is the same as the manual trans, it is not longer, The alternate cable listed is for RHD cars, which is shorter. Other cables some have suggested from other model Volvos (140, 120, etc) are longer but are for VDO speedometers which have a different threaded coupling nut at the speedo. In the mid to late seventies, it was pretty standard for the manual transmission cars to have speedo problems. During that time, the drive pins went on backorder and we never saw them again. As I recall, not only did the drive pin break, but it left it\u2019s remains in the driven gear, which are plastic and it was sometimes impossible to get the sheared cable out. If you have a source for those there are other Brit cars that can use them. For those not familiar with the subject, the drive pin is a very short speedo cable that is flat sided it\u2019s complete length, like the ends of a regular speedo cable. To help the family celebrate his March birthday, and to get a miserable winter of health dramas behind, I took a red-eye flight to Utah to see this Volvo in person. Auction on Saturday, I inspected the car at the owner's house a couple days earlier. All looked great. I had packed a tool roll in my duffel bag. Idea was to drive it home to New England after the auction. But I was a month too early for that. By luck, a big snow storm hit the Rockies, so I took another red-eye back home after the Saturday auction. Shipped the car under enclosed trailer. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the 1800 needed a ton of sorting to make it the reliable driver it is today. Took me most of a year of wrenching on it before my dad got to see the car, as he lives 250 miles away. He had wanted a Volvo in the 1970s, but could never afford it with 2 kids in college and a 3rd going soon. Bittersweet memories for sure, but dad got to see the car in person in 2018, only a year late for his birthday. He's 103 now and lives alone in a retirement center, bored silly being cooped up these last 10 weeks. A greatest generation guy, he went thru the 1918 Spanish flu, the Great Depression, and WWII. And I haven't seen him since March, as we're just getting out of the quarantine.
