TVR bought them off Rover. Yes it\u2019s an aluminium block and heads. TVR took the standard Ranger Rover engine, added a performance camshaft, possibly raised the compression ratio, gave it a new ECU fuel map and added the headers. TVR rated this version at around 240hp with ~260 lb ft of torque. It\u2019s generally considered these figures were a bit optimistic. The car is light and it does fly though. Yes, its fuel injected. Changing the plugs is actually very easy. There are clip on plug extenders that the plug leads connect to.\r\n\r\n@365daytonafan \u2013 Correct the 4.0 and 4.3 engines were the first ones for 1992 models. Then the 5.0 replaced then when introduced in late 1993. There were around 600 of the 4.x versions made.\r\n\r\n@2doors \u2013 The Chimaera was introduced in 1993 as a more entry level version. They shared the same chassis and running gear, but I believe the suspension was softer. The body style and interiors were different too. The reason for the sale is I want to reduce the number of cars I have (currently 4, TVR, Lotus Esprit, Daimler SP250 and Triumph Herald) for ease of maintenance. I am going to keep the Lotus and Herald.\r\n\r\nThe TVR is a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but I prefer the scalpel precision of the Esprit driving experience.\r\n\r\nNow some random TVR Griffith stuff about this car.\r\nNo power steering\r\nNo ABS\r\nNo traction control\r\nNo catalytic converters (it\u2019s how these 1992 cars came from the factory)\r\n100% legally import by myself with paperwork to support.\r\nThis actual car is probably one of the first 10 produced, based on research I have done on the chassis number. It appears to be numbers matching too.\r\nWhen I moved to the US from the UK in 2004 I wanted to bring over a Griffith, but I had to wait until 2017.\r\n\r\nPARTS/SUPPORT\r\nActive UK scene\r\nI have used 2 main UK suppliers, Powers Performance and Racetech for TVR specific parts.\r\nAs the engine is basically a Ranger Rover one, you can get all the tuning/service parts from your local autoparts store or US based Land Rover specialists.\r\nEASE OF MAINTENANCE\r\nThink Triumph TR6 with a dose of steroids. They are not complicated to work on or figure out. Despite being a 1992 car, it\u2019s still pretty basic. I am including the Rovergauge ECU software and the lead to plug into the ECU. This is a software program what allows you to read the basics of the engine. It does have an error code reading capability, but there are no tuning capabilities at all. The ECU is an early 90's Range Rover one with a removable TVR specific tune 'chip' in it. The wiring harness has several unused connectors for Ranger Rover specific applications.\r\n\r\nMODERN GRIFFITH HISTORY \r\nTVR resurrected the Griffith name when this car was introduced at the end of 1991, although I don\u2019t think customers got cars delivered until very early 1992. 1992 cars did not have catalytic converters fitted and were available in 4.0 and 4.3 engine versions. Griffith production stopped around Jan 1993 while TVR introduced the Chimaera model. The Griffith was re-introduced around August 1993, this time with a 5.0 engine and catalytic converters. So, 1993 Griffiths are thin on the ground. Left Hand Drive Griffiths are very rare and command a premium of around $10,000 or more. There were maybe 8 made for the Canadian market and I am guessing maybe 100 for the European market. The 1992/93 4.x cars are often referred to as \u2018pre-cats\u2019 and it\u2019s generally agreed they are the best sounding Griffith models.\r\n\r\nWhen I got the car, as an engineer, I wasn\u2019t happy with a few things, hence the work I have performed on it (done by myself). With the new camshaft kit (standard TVR spec) it\u2019s woken the car up and it really flies. The camshafts in these engines are generally considered a service item every 60-80k miles. It does not overheat here in SC. So, all the big items have been addressed in this car and it\u2019s ready to go.\r\n\r\nPlease ask away with any questions and additional photo requests. I still had my 3000S when these came out. I wanted one really badly. But alas, none for the US. I will add to the fact that yes, some LHD's did come to Canada. The then current head of the TVRNA Club had one. I called him to get a valuation on my 3000S for new insurance. I asked if he thought we might get the Griffith over here. He replied, \"Oh yes. I already have one.\" I about cried. No way they were coming here. TVR's are REAL driving machines. No electronic aides. No cruise control. No active suspension. NOTHING!!! You need to DRIVE these cars. Still do. I love TVR's for that. I still lust after any TVR. The Griffith of this vintage was one of the fastest cars available anywhere in the world when it came out. It was the torque that made these fly. The 5 Speed makes a big difference. My 3000S only had a 4 Speed. It still was damn quick. I LOVE the body lines. The clean chassis is a BIG plus. If you want a very limited production, classic Brit Roadster, that will get you down the road at serious velocity, THIS is it. And a big plus is our Seller. He is a Brit. He is an engineer. You get that lovely leather and wood interior and amazing styling. The difference with a V8 TVR is that you get incredible power and great handling. \n\nIn North America we often find ourselves on freeways trying to get to our favourite back roads. Unlike many british classics that struggle to keep up with traffic, the TVR has long legs. My Chimaera will happily cruise in top gear at 75mph and 90mph is only a press of the loud pedal away.\n\nAlso, if you long for that american V8 rumble, the TVR has that in spades. \n\nIn terms of handling, I have started to dip deeper this season. The chassis for these cars was developed from a racing car. Its not all that unlike the design of an Elan or Europa in concept. The engine sits behind the front wheels and its a light block so the balance is quite neutral.\n\nI've owned a number of sports cars all with different traits and trade-offs (MGB, Porsche 911, Caterham Super 7, Mazdaspeed Miata). Each time I have sold them looking for something that was missing or to tick a different box. \n\nFor the time being the TVR seems to have that perfect mix for me. I would point out that the car has the correct early Griffith nose cone on it. The later 1993 on cars had a slim horizontal bar across the grill mouth. The earlier cars had a flat front. So, an early car with a later nose is a good indication of accident damage.\r\nI will also say that the dashpanel in this car is actually a wood effect vinyl wrap finish and not an original wood veneer. The UK climate took its toll on these. Some fit various alloy dash panels, but I hear they reflect the sun. The later AJP and Speed 6 powered TVRs suffered issues in the past and are more difficult to own, especially if you are not hands on.
