There are 3 timing chain tensioners on the C114 engine, one which is automatically tensioned on the main chain near the firewall and 2 more for the cam chains which are manually tensioned (irrespective of model year) on each cylinder head.\r\n\r\nThe main chain tensioner was upgraded over the years to be more reliable, but the chain was still substandard and suffered from stretching. Most SM's that have been worked on have been upgraded to a more robust main chain and the lastest of the chain tensioners (referred to as the \"curved fixed limiter\" tensioner). \r\n\r\nHistory on the main tensioner is here:\r\nhttp://www.citroen-sm.org/wiki/index.php?title=Primary_Chain_Tensioner\r\n\r\nThe original top chains were also prone to premature stretching. Factory original top chains should be re-tensioned every 7500 miles. Like the main chain, the top chains are typically upgraded to a more robust chain which will allow for the manual tensioning interval to be greater (20k miles). The process is very well documented on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abRGNSwgg5Q\r\n\r\nThe other upgrade that is often done (but not always) done is to replace the sodium filled exhaust valves with solid valves.
