Very odd that someone would change from Red to Yellow? They did use the factory color and did a very complete job. You can only see traces of the red on the frame underneath. Before I bought it, it spend 8 years in a Texas barn under a tarp. The pans and main frame side rails seem free from any significant rust. Just small pinholes in \"dent\" area where the spare tire rests.\r\nIt isn't a numbers matching car, as near as I can tell. I bought it for a fun driver and AC in a convertible is very rare. Great records for Corvair production don't exist but this one confused me. As 'alphsud' says, the case number indicates it's from a late '64. The VIN shows that it is an early '65. The body tag shows that it was originally a turbo car... but it wasn't. The rear fenders check out as original and don't have the large cut out for the exhaust pipe in the passenger side. That made me concerned for a VIN swap so I went under the car and found the VIN stamps on the frame rails and the VIN is original and correct. Early in '65 they had issues with turbo engine supplies. It is possible that a 140 was fitted at the factory on this early car. No way to tell.\r\nThe AC system is a GM 1966 Corvair unit. Seems to have been installed sometime after the car was new - probably by the dealer, as all AC units were.\r\nAs 'alphsud' said, I bought this for a fun weekend driver. Hard to find restorable Corvairs that aren't complete rust buckets. Unfortunately, I am now looking at back surgery and simply, physically, can't complete the project. While I almost always prefer a coupe over a drop top the Corvair is one of the few exceptions. And what I really like is the four carb version as a basis. I grew up in the car business and my father always loved 'orphan\" like cars and he really liked the 140 horsepower edition. One of his favorite pastimes was surprising larger, V8 powered cars in stop light to stop light \"comparisons\". With a well tuned four speed car it could be a surprising outcome providing you weren't taking on triple carbureted big blocks monsters. He claimed the 140 version would usually even outrun the 164 horsepower Turbo Corvair for the simple reason the Turbo was difficult to keep properly tuned. He also liked to point out they had no more handling issues than a VW Bug or a Porsche 911. The key to all of them was correct tire pressures. Ralph Nader managed to kill this excellent American built and designed answer to the Volkswagen with what later turned out to be a totally false narrative. This included throwing the car into a panic maneuver that he thought was out of camera range among other things. That was truly a sad event as with the coming OPEC oil crises in later years a well de-bugged Corvair might have developed into a great success story for GM as opposed to end of an excellent engineering exercise far different and imaginative from the American designs of the day. If the buyer returned it to the red/red color combo and restored it to somewhat original condition along with maybe some modern engine horsepower and reliability upgrades it would be my perfect version. Especially with a well sorted A/C system. The Corvair was doomed once the Mustang came along, and would have been even if Nader's book had never been published, though that didn't help. \r\n\r\nIn the Mustang's early years, car magazines would do comparison tests, usually against the Barracuda and the Corvair Spyder or Corsa. The Corvair's shortcomings in this new category became evident pretty quickly. it was more expensive, and was slower in acceleration due to lower horsepower. Oh sure, it handled better, but that wasn't what most of the target audience was after. \r\n\r\nThen along came the Camaro. Cheaper to produce, available with more engine options (I mean, no offense to the 180 horsepower turbo six, but c'mon, a 396 V8 was available, on top of other V8s), and shared parts with other Chevy models. \r\n\r\nDon't forget that GM created even more competition for the Corvair via the Pontiac Firebird. With that, it was amazing that they kept the car around through 1969, since sales had slowed to a crawl.
