This is my first BaT experience and I was very surprised to wake up and see all this activity this morning. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and complementary dialogue. I will be as active as I can during this process and will attempt to answer all serious questions in a timely manner. I really love this car, but I purchased another ERA earlier this year, so this one gets to be enjoyed by one of you now. I will say that out of the handful of ERA (and one SPF) cars I've had this is the most enjoyable to drive. I purchased this car from a lawyer who was too frightened to drive it (not sure why). He had it 10 years and only put about 2K miles on it. He purchased it from the original elderly owner who also didn't put very many miles on it. I think both of them preferred to have a garage queen. So the miles are low, but things need attention when not driven frequently. I went through the entire car with my mechanic and attended to anything that it needed - putting over 1,000 miles on in the process. Yes, the tires need attention, which is why I mentioned it to the BaT team. They sure look pretty, but fresh rubber would be a good idea. I leave that decision to the next guy and kindly allow him the pleasure of burning up the old set having fun learning the limits of this car in a large open area (:\n\nDue to lack of regular use, I discovered that old gas had worked its way into gumming up the cylinder heads. Of course I had the carbs rebuilt and after you figure out how to do an intake gasket replacement and FE head removal you want to make sure you never have to do it again. For that reason, I chose to let the experts at Total Engine make my heads as perfect as they knew how. They are port matched and my mechanic has the lash, timing and all the other particulars set to give it that wonderful sound and performance you can experience in the videos. I have put around 400 plus miles on the car since last putting a wrench on it and I am very pleased with it now. You will be very fortunate to have a sorted car like this one. \n\nI did send the BaT team a photo showing the jag rear end, but it didn't make the cut for some reason. Perhaps because when I took the photo it was dirty under there. I have NOT detailed the underside of this car or even put a hose to it. When I lived in Oregon there was a time when I'd drive from Portland to Los Angeles at least once a month and I'd do the 950 miles in a single day in my Cobra. My fake was factory built in England so it's not a kit car, but it is a fake and has proved to be nearly as reliable and trouble-free as my everyday Toyota. My car is also completely original in terms of paint, upholstery etc and frankly looks like hell! My neighbor used to refer to it as a 'Rat-Rod Cobra' but it's patina is genuine, real and the natural result of using it as a real car. The effect of it's deteriorated condition is that everyone assumes it to be an unrestored original and combined with it's RHD configuration seems to attract crowds wherever it goes - even amongst jaded and sophisticated collectors and enthusiast at Monterey in August. I was surprised but at the traditional Thursday night gathering at the Baja Cantina it appeared my car attracted more attention than anything else there! My point is, these are great cars for having fun with. Poor old Keith Martin seems to have forgotten that . I obviously like these cars. For a real convertible feel and challenging/fun power to weight ratio they are hard to beat. I do not consider factory built cars to be kits versus those that are assembled at various places like Factory Five cars. ERA's when built in Ct. or by a similarly reputable builder are awesome cars. When you put a Kirkham/ERA/SF next to a Backdraft/FF you can easily see that you get what you pay for. Lance, the owner of SF is doing a great job. I was surprised to see that in Superformance's case the prices have escalated sharply. I have not driven an ERA or SP car to compare, but the quality of KMS' work is exceptional. Fully a third of their production have been bought by Shelby American and rebranded as Shelby cars. This is not unusual, if you think about it, since the original cars weren't built by Shelby American, either; they were built in England by AC and sent over here to be completed. \n\nI don't know who builds the fiberglass cars for Shelby. My hunch is that they are made by SP in South Africa- their build quality is very good, too. Kirkham do not build FRP cars, only metal ones, so they are not building the FRP cars as far as I know. \n\nInterestingly, KMS have also done a few non-aluminum cars- a polished copper one or two, and a bronze one. They are eye-poppingly beautiful, but probably just as hard to keep shiny. \n\nI keep looking at this color, and it makes me want to paint mine. Maybe I'll just polish it up again. I will tell you that I am pretty much at the limit for length in all the various areas to comfortably drive my car. I would imagine an extra 100 lbs would be quite a challenge getting in and out as well. I also owned a 2005 Superformance with the dropped foot box. In my experience, I find my ERA to have more comfortable room for me all around. These cars require the drivers and passengers to really WANT to make the experience happen. Nothing about getting in and out is easy. Those that can manage it are very much rewarded with an unforgettable experience and opportunity. With more and more seat time and experience, the car becomes more comfortable to drive. The first time I attempted to drive one I felt I would never be able to manage it.
