This might be a personal British Flag on the lower rear fenders. I would replace the antenna though. My guess is that they were built post October \u201973 and titled as \u201873s in the UK. But an October \u201973 car in the US would be titled as a \u201974 as our model years start earlier. Then came the second \u201974 MGBs: still chrome bumpers but with the giant \u201cSabrina\u201d bumper guards. Finally, the rubber-bumpered Bs came out around June of \u201974. These are known as 74.5 MGBs. \r\n\r\nA lot of MGB owners were indignant about the Leyland take-over of BMC, thus a lot of those BL badges got \u201clost\u201d on \u201870s MGBs. I know my \u201973 B/GT doesn\u2019t have them, nor does it have front side-marker lights. I now see the ViN tag on the driver\u2019s door reads \u201c8 74\u201d - contradicting my previous comment. I still can\u2019t believe a car came out of the Abingdon factory with these bumpers as late as August of \u201974. My guess is that this car has been converted from rubber to chrome bumpers. in fact, if you look carefully at photo #28, you can see that there is no seam in the sheet metal under the tail-lamp. The factory chrome bumpered cars had a seam here, whereas the conversion kits offered by the likes of Moss Motors included these pieces that had no seam. They were required because the rubber-bumpered cars had a flat inset metal piece below the tail lamps - making room for the rumbber bumpers.\r\n\r\nSo this is really a 74.5 MGB. I like it. Obviously enthusiast-owned and quite nicely detailed, and the conversion has been carried out with sufficient skill that it fooled me. I do see that the car has a tube-shock conversion at the rear wheels - which may be a part of lowering the suspension (rubber-bumpered cars sat 1.5\u201d higher on their suspension), or it may just have been done as an improvement. I don\u2019t know if it actually is but it certainly can\u2019t hurt. \r\n\r\nI would mourn the loss of the SU carbs; as I fail to undeerstand how the downdraft Weber could be an improvement, but it\u2019s OK. If this were my car, it would soon find either an overdrive transmission or a five-speed conversion - as that feature is truly transformative - increasing the COMFORTABLE top speed about 10-15 mph to the 75-80 range. Given the thoughtfulness and quality of most of the work that\u2019s been done on this car, I would guess that the paint may have been stunning at one time but is now a bit tired. Perhaps just some color sanding and buffing would improve it a lot. \r\n\r\nBut it\u2019s a really nice car as it is, and it should fetch a fair price. When I purchased the car it had the original chrome bumpers with the heavy single steel rear bumper bracket and big \"sabrina\" overriders. I replaced the original chrome bumpers, overriders and bracket with new ones when the car's body and paint work was done due to their condition. I note that this car does have some neat suspension upgrades (tube shocks front and rear) not mentioned in the text.
