You can either live with the problem or get a new dash. It's held in by four nuts and can be changed out in a few hours.\n\nRockers and front valence look a little lumpy. I had an ivory Spider and it showed off every ripple, especially in the bright sunshine. Paint looks kind of cheap. Still this doesn't look very rusty. The Alfetta grille is an interesting custom touch. Someone cared enough about this car to fit an expensive Haartz cloth top.\n\nIf the engine is stock and in good repair, I don't see why this wouldn't pass California emissions. Many people in warm climates will reupholster their seats in cloth for comfort, but when you think about it most convertibles in general normally had some form of leather or vinyl seating which is easier to deal with if the car gets caught in rain with the top down. If I was the new buyer I would check all the vacuum hoses for cracks and replace as necessary, articularly the hoses to and from the charcoal canister, which is located behind the front passenger's side tire. The oil vapor separator is showing typical rust (on the driver's side tire well, so it needs to be cleaned out or replaced, including the vacuum line from it that runs under the radiator to the base of the oil dipstick. This line tends to clog under the radiator where the oil sludge tends to collect. Finally, throw in a new heated 3-wire O2 sensor to replace the OEM 2-wire sensor. With a heated O2 sensor, the engine will reach operating temperature quicker and run much better. You will have to do some simple wiring to make it work; one wire to engine computer link (under the battery junction box on driver's side fender well, one to ground, and one to positive connection such as the positive side of the coil. However, my wife's '79 Spider breathes fire, with modified induction (still Spica), ignition, pistons, and cams. Stock exhaust and emissions, and nothing visible. The air pump is a pain but the stock exhaust is reasonably good, certainly better than the period American equivalents and certainly not the first place to go for performance. Three steps:\n\n1. Have a professionals tune it to stock specs that the smog shops expect to see. NEVER tell them to tune it for a smog check or legally they can touch it. Need to have a special nod-and-a-wink to keep THEM safe.\n\n2. Good quality, stock exhaust/cats and all equipment working.\n\n3. You don't have the tacked-on Bosch Spider nose and spoiler, which I find silly (I have one). It's a cleaner, more subtle car than other Bosch Spiders.\n\nTo restore in California, you can't do it for the value of the car, even doing your own work. Paint job? For a good one in a Calif urban area, start at $5000 and go up to any number you can imagine. Seats? My cheap guy in Oakland would do them for $500, but that's marginal work. Good work is probably closer to $1000. You'd spend more than the car's worth to restore, but that's true of most Alfas, including everything back to non-Veloce Giuliettas at market values right now.
