In early '80's in High School my best friend had one and I (we) learned most of our drifting and rally car attempts in this vintage Corolla. Not to mention Jim Rockford \"J-turns\" and if it was a little faster Bo Duke jumps, although we did get it airborne on more than one occasion. It was Michigan and his little Corolla never stopped in snow, mud or dirt roads. With more ground clearance it would have probably kept up with most 4WD of the day. Sadly it did not survive a power slide into a curb at about 30MPH. Bent the frame and all the passenger side suspension. However, the engine went on to run a small personal use sawmill at his Brother-in-Laws northern Michigan farm. The '70s through the late '80s were the zenith of Toyota styling. Once the \"jellybean era\" hit, they looked like everything else on the road from that point on. The automatic, unfortunately, is the killer on this otherwise very attractive Corolla. Dependable, sure! Excitement? Eh, not so much. But a later 5-speed can be swapped in as a pretty straight-forward procedure, so for the right buy-in, this is going to be a nice bargain for the buyer who doesn't care for the automatic transmission. In 1988, we moved to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for one year. \r\n My mother bought a '79 blue-on-blue, automatic Corolla Liftback with 75k miles as a \"temporary\" run-about for $600. Thing ran like a top, not a dent, cold a/c. It was stupid simple to do maintenance on and never gave us any trouble. We never intended to keep beyond the year, but when we moved, we couldn't not bring it with us. It was just that good. Over the next 5 years, the family put another 80k miles on it. My father took to the car and decided it deserved a refreshening, so he repainted the fading blue paint, upgraded some interior bits, replaced some weatherstripping. Then one day, upon leaving the local u-pull-it salvage yard, he found the car was MIA. It had been stolen from the lot, stripped of every removable body panel and most of the interior, and left at a boat launch, nose first in Tampa Bay. My father, daunted but determined, drained the engine of the water, got it running(-ish), and spent the next year scrounging for parts to put it back together. Ultimately, it had been hurt enough by the water damage and brutalized electronics that it just needed more than pop had to give at the time. He let it go, ironically, I believe, to a guy that parted out cars. But for years after, I would occasionally spy another Corolla Liftback here and there sporting the stolen body parts from that car (it was impossible to miss the uniquely identifiable runs in the paint). Unfortunately, I could never get turned around fast enough to follow them. I disagree with the comments that a 1979 Corolla Liftback does not belong on BaT. While they sold thousands of them, and they were appliances at the time, few remain 40 years later. The fact that there were so many around back then means that many of us remember them when new. The fact that so few survived, means that we have not seen a good one in a while. \r\n\r\nEverybody will not like everything on BaT, but everybody interested in collectible cars should find something they like here. Auctions like this one also make owning an interesting car possible for people on a limited budget. \r\n\r\nI am always amused that the people who think a particular vehicle is not worthy of BaT take the time to read through the auction and comment. \r\n\r\nI hope the seller is able to correct whatever issue exists and the Corolla is relisted.
