We played places like Rehoboth, Dewey, and Ocean City, MD. And finally we got booked into an open-air venue in Berlin, MD, which is inland from OC, as the opening band for Asleep At The Wheel- a Western swing band that some of you may know and maybe have seen. \r\n\r\nMy day job is emergency medicine, so a lot of these gigs involved driving out to the shore on Saturday, setting up (this includes our PA and a Hammond B3 and Leslie cabinet) playing four sets that night, and then tearing down, going home to Annapolis, turning in the rented van, and showing up at work at 7am. This was a long time ago- I need more sleep than that, now, and my terrific lead singer and also my peerless jazz violin player, who both fronted the band, have passed on to that great gig in the sky. \r\n\r\nOn that Saturday night in Berlin, we opened for AATW, on a second stage, so that both bands remained set up. They did their opening set, then took a break and we did our second set, then they did their second set, and we did ours, etc. So, for the final set of the night, it was AATW- and they hadn't yet done \"Hot Rod Lincoln\"- which was a staple of their live performances. \r\n\r\nWe were finished with our sets, but instead of tearing down, we decided to just watch them perform. Musicians do love to watch other musicians, no surprise there. \r\n\r\nThey wound through their set, and FINALLY Ray Benson did \"THE lick\", and they were off and running. By this time, it was night- we had started in the mid afternoon- but now it was well and truly nighttime, a hot summer night, and AATW charged into Hot Rod Lincoln for all they were worth. \r\n\r\nWith solos (TWO fiddle players, Cindy Cashdollar on steel guitar, Ray) between the verses, ALL the sound effects you could ask for, and all the trimmings, this lasted about 15-20 minutes, of pure Western Swing heaven.... leading up to Ray's punchline, when he gets pulled over by the cops, and says.... \"But officer..... I was ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL!!!!\"\r\n\r\nThat was a long time ago- decades now. It was the best performance of HRL I've ever been lucky enough to watch and hear. I remember it as if it were yesterday. The hot summer, night, the twang guitars, Ray's Telecaster with a map of Texas on the front of it, the two fiddlers soloing together... just magical, all of it. \r\n\r\nWe got home very late that night- about four in the morning. The song ran through my head all the way home. Late at night, hardly any other cars on the highway, driving my rented van with all of our stuff in it home... by then, the taillights was all you could see. \r\n\r\nHappy trails, folks, and I hope the new owner of this car knows the song and listens to it often.
