Look, if it's even mostly rust free, what's not to like? Quirky MK1 features, 1275, Procar/Scat Seats (not anything near correct, but they are very comfortable), left-hand drive (a plus in the real world, a minus in most of the mini community) and what looks to be decent paint and build quality. We should hold the Captain Obvious comments down to a dull roar. Everyone knows where this deviates from stock. Everyone knows, including the seller that this is not numbers matching, or a cooper or any kind, and is not representing it as such. Everyone knows it is certainly not destined to set any high water mark in the selling price department, but the BaT listers know what we all know and likely set a reasonable reserve for what this is. If you want a mega-buck trailer queen, or a low mileage cooper that has been with the original owner since it was born, there are plenty of choices out there. Minis are a blast to drive. If you want something that won't require raiding your kids college fund, and one that getting a rock chip or a door ding really won't matter, then do your self a favor a give this one a serious look. One was a local and well known Mini enthusiast. He had a very nice early 850 that was white with an engine upgrade and some understated yet effective modifications. I wondered what would happen to his car and when I first saw this Mini on auction in Denver I thought that maybe this was it. A quick glance at the pictures verified that it isn't. That really has no bearing on this auction; it just caused a bit of a shiver when I saw the car. I miss the days when \"...we all just sweated on sticky vinyl seats...\", to quote @LarryH, and the obituaries were something my grandmother read. Now I'm living a poem she had on her kitchen wall about getting up in the morning, part of which was, \"I gather my wits and read the obits, and if I'm not dead I go back to bed.\"\n\nMoving on from that depressing little cul de sac, this is a nice looking Mini and the modifications performed are just right. The little white tags on the front seats suggest that they came from the manufacture with that upholstery which then means that the rear seat was made to match. Very nice, as are the coordinated door panels.\n\nThe engine and transmission in this Mini gives every sign of being from an Austin America; i.e., smog head, remote shifter with rubber sandwich plate, and HS4 SU on a cast iron manifold. The brackets are still on the carb for the AA air filter can. Contrary to the mechanic's notes it probably didn't have an HIF carb originally. I'm not aware of any US smog 1275 having an HIF and I don't think that would even fit on the manifold. As the intake and exhaust manifolds were cast as a single piece the exhaust section has been cut off to fit the LCB exhaust manifold. If the car still has the high speed versus idle drivability issue I'd suggest checking that the intake plenum wasn't punctured when cutting off the exhaust. It's a long shot since there's lots of meat there to do the cut, but you never know. And I'm talking a pin hole sized puncture that will make it run lean on idle resulting in an over rich high speed mixture if the idle is richened up accordingly. Also, even advancing the ignition to 12 degrees BTDC is still a bit retarded for a stock 1275. I'm not suggesting that the mechanic did the work improperly, since they took the time to do ignition and exhaust analysis. That's just some thoughts on the matter based on experience. The absence of the engine number plate usually indicates machine work has been done such as skimming the block, so there could be internal modifications.\n\n@HillbillyHeathen - Ah, the good old days., or was it more a case of our good old ways? My example was driving up a brick street in Pittsburgh after a freezing rain in a 1961 Econoline - a real 'no bueno' situation. Forward motion gradually changed to rearward motion with no perceptible stationary event. Recovery, such as it was, resulted from getting sideways (yes, you can see better) with the sides of the tire treads getting some small amount of grip on the edges of the bricks. That was luck, not skill. While still travelling sideways I got enough control to go backwards into the curb and chattered along the gutter till all speed was scrubbed off. Thankfully that occurred just before reaching the first parked car. The press got access to the Austin Se7en and Morris Mini Minor a month earlier that John Doe, in August \u201859. Ironically this was the same year that Cadillac built the largest ever fins on cars with the Eldorado. The records say that the Austin Se7en disappeared at the end of 1961, but I\u2019ve seen Austin Se7ens that were tagged as 1962 model year. This may be because in those days, some districts, states etc would register the car when it was SOLD verses when it was built. I had a mk2 Austin Mini, with door pockets, outside door hinges, sliding door glass etc ( built like any mk2 ), but it was registered in Canada as a 1970 car. So this one is most likely an Austin Mini. I agree that the MK1s are the most desirable Classic Minis, and there's nothing wrong with a later, bigger, better engine (and brakes of course!) for the best of all worlds. \r\n\r\nI've seen discussion about the cut down cast iron intake. It's quite a bit of work considering an aftermarket aluminum manifold is well under $100 and would allow fitting an HIF44 (as well as that HS4. The 1 3/4\" HIF is a tremendous upgrade and one I highly recommend. On this car, it would be like going to the next bigger engine!\r\n\r\nGood luck with the sale.
