I had a P1800 Volvo that got totaled by a drunk driver and my mother - a United Airlines flight attendant - gave me her airport car. With 205 70s a 3.8 V6 and teenage enthusiasm I had a reasonably good time with it. Disaster struck however in the form of time slips. You know, those little receipts you used to get at the end of the drag strip. Bud's Creek drag strip, Southern Maryland, 1990 (ish): $12 to enter and $15 to run-what-you-brung. Obviously my buddy and I signed up for the $15 option. I removed the hubcaps using a special tool - 'cause back then stealing hubcaps was still a thing - as well as the air-cleaner and stuck all the stuff in the trunk. I ran a totally un-respectable 17.8 at 72 mph in the quarter mile. Later times were not much better. The Bud's Creek announcer was entertained by the car saying \"this young man has brought his grandma's car to the track - watch out for the Sunday paper blowing out the window\". Also had the wire wheel covers to class it up. \r\n\r\nBoy that 307 V8 could barely get out of its own way but it was a solid car and was great for hauling family around. Good car to have growing up since it's a bit harder to get in trouble with one of these slugs, in terms of driving like a hooligan. Too bad I was such a mega nerd that I took no advantage whatsoever of what the wagon chassis can afford to a young kid. Other dudes probably were jealous of it, knowing it's potential?
