The vast majority of cars on the road are OBD-II these days, so most of the smog test stations prefer to just do those. It probably suited me better, I abused that poor old Subie and ran it into the ground, not much was left of that thing when I was finished. When I go to start my cars after their 5-6 month hibernation I simply turn the ignition on, count to 5 to let the fuel pressure build, turn to start and by the third revolution they start. A few things I remember.... There were two pin hole lights on the dash that let you know if you were driving economically. Green would light during light load, and if you pushed the accelerator far enough then Amber would light up. If you were in the middle maybe cruising up hill then both lights would be lit. Seemed like AI to me back then but now I know it was just a vacuum switch. Most Cadillacs of this era had automatic lights. Twilight Sentinel I think it was called, it also dimmed the brights when a on-coming car approached. It worked well that kind of AI on a car back them seemed astonishing to me. I remember even on cold days the heat would come up very quickly. That was nice here in the North East. These cars were considered small back then and the chassis is based on other smaller GM GT cars of the day so these were quite nimble. Also if you look at official BMW sales literature from the late 70's they actually have pictures with arrows comparing and pointing out deficiencies in this cars interior bits and build quality. Back then Cadiallac and Jaguar were on top. BMW was the new kid on the sport luxury block trying to claw it's way to the top by knocking others down. That type of marketing is long gone. These engines made a lot of torque and I bumped the HEI distributor a bit forward. The car constantly broke it's rusty motor mounts which were NLA by the late 80's so I would get them welded. I'd love to own one again but I cant bring myself to purchase anything with a solid rear axle at this point. So looks like these are early Alfa's are off my bucket list.\n\nLots of these had fuel injection problems and were quickly converted to carburetor. But it was a very potent and efficient system. That olds engine with the efi was very quick for the day. ( surprised more than one hot rodder or vette owner off the line) With petal to the metal the shift from second occured at 83mph ! But it topped out at 110mph ( stock olds 5.7 engines seemed to run out of revs up there). They changed to throttle body efi at some point I know a friend had a 79 de' elegance and it was a bit of a dog by comparison.\r\nMine was abused before I got it so it took me a long time to get it right. But it was a good car overall. Las Palmas St. in Trans Design. One thing we learned early on and was encouraged by the Trans faculty (Strother MacMinn, Harry Bradley, & Keith Teeter) was to visit the local car dealers and test drive cars. All the dealers near the campus were quite familiar with students looking at what was for sale and test driving. We heard that one of the first new Sevilles in Los Angeles was in at one of the local Cadillac dealers, so friend and I rushed over during lunch hour to look and drive it. The salesman was more than happy to let us, so he grabbed a triple-silver car for us to test drive. I drove first, and being used to the ride and noise in my 1965 Corvair Corsa Turbo the first thing I noticed was the soft ride and the somewhat disconnected feel of the power steering. As we cruised around the area, we all noticed pedestrians and other drivers snapping their heads a the Seville as we drove by. I decide to drive by the campus and into the side parking lot, and again, other students and faculty that recognized us were snapping their heads jaws dropped as I drove by. The salesman gave us the premium brochure which I still have. Later on that semester while taking lettering (by hand) we had to do an example in script, so I chose \"Seville\". Doyald Young was my lettering instructor, who was a stickler for perfection, told me how he hated the script particularly the letters \"L\" saying that they just wrong. He then lightly drew in pencil on my brochure over the word Seville what he thought was a better script \"L\".
