Purists will always tell you that the 4-speed manual with electric overdrive is the only way to drive a Mk 2 (and mine is manual) and that is true if you want to drive it like the bank robbers did in the UK in the 1960's. It was the preferred get-away car of the era, and whenever a Mk2 was reported stolen on a Sunday night, the local police pretty much knew that some bank in the area was about to expect a visit and request for immediate withdrawal of all available cash despite the blokes would not have any accounts in the bank. The Mk2 was ideal as it could seat 4 people, bloody fast with strong Dunlop disc brakes in all corners for late braking that no Zephyr, Morris Minor or Wolseley could match. Eventually the British police surrendered to the philosophy that if you can't beat them, join them, and the Mk2 became a stable and popular police interceptor. \n\nGoing back to 2017, few people would take a Mk 2 to its limit in daily traffic, and even as a die-hard \"manual\" fan, I have often been sitting in traffic and wish it had an automatic (like my 1970 XJ Ser 1). As @Jags-in-the-Barn state, the auto box is pretty solid and will offer plenty of great driving, and I wouldn't let the automatic deter me from this great Mk2 at all. No matter whether manual or auto, a Mk 2 will always be able to keep up with modern traffic, and I have seen many surprised faces from BMW and other modern car owners, when I rev my Mk 2 through the gears from a stop light and let that wonderful dual overhead cam in-line six scream for more gas from the SUs and leaving those modern car in the dust (only recommended when you know your Mk2 real well so you don't blow a gasket...).\n\nA couple of other remarks, - the paint scratch on the driver side rear skirt is an easy fix. The entire skirt comes off with loosing two simple screws (see picture 56), and you can take the piece to a paint shop and have it repainted inexpensively. Also, the bonnets have a tendency to \"walk\" at little and can chew into the edge/railing around engine compartment (see pic 88) and fitting a small rubber seal all way around is an inexpensive way to avoid rust on that edge. New fuel pump is absolutely a plus, the old ones have a temper like a red haired girl that is not taken to town as often as she likes. If you don't drive it on a regular basis, don't be surprised if you have to take the inner left panel in the boot out, and carefully knock on the fuel pump house while begging with British accent and it may respond back with the small chuck-chuck-chuck sound you want to hear as it caves in and send some fuel forward to the SUs. A modern fuel pump will make that a thing of the past. Same thing with electronic ignition, unless you have a passion for replacing points and fiddling with condensers and rotors, that\u00b4s a neat upgrade as a driver.\n\nThis car looks like a very solid and tidy Mk 2, a buyer may want to pay attention to the steering and maybe seller can add some comments on that. The power steering is normally well working (as long as you keep the fluid level up), but if the steering house has not been replaced or rebuild, as slack build up in the joints over time, many mechanics fix it with tightening the steering house to a point where there is no adjustment (rather than bite the bullet and replace bushings), at which point it may need either replacement and potentially a complete steering rebuilt. The latter can be a bit comprehensive, in particular if you a garage weekend warrior , and you will end up taking the entire front end off the car rather than trying to do it on the car (trust me, been there, done that, - but with new polyurethane bushings it will drive another 30+ years without any needs in this compartment). Aside from that and an incident of drinking brake fluid (not good for the stomach and interior parts, - if the master cylinder seals are old, the vacuum booster - located where you least expect it under the passenger side front fender - can \"suck\" brake fluid into the engine after a drive, and next time you start it up, you will provide your neighborhood with nice clouds of white smoke...) I can testify to 15 years of trouble free driving and great fun. The nonsense about the need of having two Jaguars because one is always in the shop is a myth if you drive them and keep them up so they don't get arthritis. A Jaguar only punish an owner that doesn't take care of it. That said, there is nothing wrong having two or more, - I enjoy all three of mine! Other good news is plenty of part supply here in the US, so no excuse for not keeping her in top shape, and great club support (JCNA) if you are into those activities.\n\nI will not disclose any numbers here in respect of seller/buyers but can just state that my Mk2 has tripled in value over the past 15 years, and while there are quite a few of them out there (compared to other classics) they are still on the low end of appreciation and this is the time to buy into these great and highly enjoyable cars. Can't ask for much more from those Brown Lane boys. \n\nThe color combo of this car very elegant and should do very well, not a color combo you come across often on a Mk 2 at the Jag fraternity meetings. \n\nOne final warning to potential new owners: If you are shy, don't like to strike up a conversation with the most unlikely people or like to have your car admired wherever you take it, you may want to stay away from a Mk 2. If you like to get in and out of a gas station in less than 5 minutes, this may not be your car, - I yet have to pump gas without having people coming over and talk about the car. I know that can be said about many classic cars, but the curves of the Mk 2 just seem to a special attraction. I know the famous quote from a journalist in the 1960's was said about the E-Type, when he stated that \"nothing aside from a limping St. Bernard dog will attract so much female attention than arriving in a Jaguar [E-Type] \". Its performance can be improved somewhat by installing a rebuild torque converter or using one of a more modern design. These boxes also require a lot more care to set up and maintain compared modern electronic auto boxes. And These boxes have a well-earned reputation as \"leakers\". But the use of modern gasket materials and a few upgrade parts from a British firm that rebuilds these DG boxes can make one of these boxes a definite non-leaker for life.\n\nHas this been mentioned by someone else? the walnut veneer is all wrong. In 1963 Jaguar was selling the MK II with beautiful book matched burl walnut veneer with sapwood edge trim. It also looks like that the veneer is missing from the dash cap. The veneers weren't that durable, bonded as they were to the base plywood with animal glue, the veneer regularly delaminated within 5 years in the moist or hot climates. I have zero complaints about how the car has driven and handled over the last 5 years so I would recommend them, maybe somebody that has tried a selection of other tires can add to this. \nJagnaut- Thank you too for your questions. \nUnfortunately I don't know too much about the original history of the car but a quick look on an alternative classic car site just revealed that 11 of the 19 MK2's currently for sale all had orange turn indicator lenses, not that that proves anything either way I just thought it interesting. \nThe spare wheel/tire was the best condition wheel of the original set with a Michelin Redline 185 15 X Radial tire. \nConcerning the mileage showing at 47,XXX as I cannot prove this is original, I can only say that it is what is being shown, but I must tell you that both of the very trusted British car mechanics that I have allowed to work on my car have both stated that they believe the mileage shown to be accurate. \nAnd lastly, concerning an early sale price prediction...... Not all of them but certainly the Mk2 sedans. As the owner of four Jags (two Mk2 sedans (one beautifully unrestored and the other a wreck), one XK150 (restored) and one XKE (very much unrestored and not in the good way), I am always interested in the comments when any of these cars appear on BAT. When looking at the cars, the easy ones to get a handle on are the beautifully restored (nice to check the details and compare it to my car) and the not so great unrestored cars (is this a bargain, and would I like to bid on it even though the last thing that I need is another Jag?). Cars like this are a challenge for me when I try to put myself in the shoes of the bidders.\r\n\r\nThe challenge is to figure out just why other readers would want to purchase this car, and what should they pay. The problem with a mid-market car like this Mk2 is that it makes no sense to beautifully restore the car because you\u2019d be forever financially underwater. So why buy it at all? Well the obvious reason is that a restored car is too expensive and a wreck is too much work. In other words it fits the bidder\u2019s budget but does it fit the bidder\u2019s needs?\r\n\r\nThe biggest elephant in the room when looking at a car like this is to disabuse yourself of thinking that its originality is of particular financial merit (i.e. the taillight discussion). A Mk2 automatic will never be worth top value. NEVER. A beautifully original or beautifully restored 3.8 with overdrive right hand drive sold in the UK is the only car that fits that bill (although a really exceptional LHD car will occasionally deliver on the price \u2013 a car on the Canepa site about a year ago comes to mind). And for those thinking that the market for these Jags is going to once again rise like the tide, I wouldn\u2019t hold your breath. Much as I\u2019d love it to be otherwise, the higher market dollar is going in the direction of e-types (with thousands to choose from \u2013 after all, they made close to 70,000 of them).\r\n\r\nSo why buy a MK2? Because they are great to drive (if set up properly), have beautiful proportions, and the engine sounds can make your heart melt. And why buy an automatic like this? Well, maybe you like the \u201cold guy\u201d thing (and this from a guy who others would likely put in that category but I\u2019m definitely in denial) of cruising smoothly along secondary roads on your way to \u201chigh\u201d tea or a sumptuous brunch. For those who like to drive, buy an automatic because it is a bargain, and then spend your extra cash to do a host of upgrades. What kind of upgrades? Simple: T5 transmission, electric steering from EZ Steering, an electric brake booster, a nice Moto-Lita wheel, and a set of GAZ adjustable shocks.\r\n\r\nAnd what about this car you say? Hmmm. That\u2019s a tough one. I have a with 25,000 mile car from date of manufacture, and likely one of the better unrestored Jags that you will ever come across. The doors shut perfectly, the interior is stock yet still presents very well, and of course the running gear is stock. The only restorations have been to replace the door and trunk seals. This is a 50,000 mile car. Twice as many miles but still not very many in its fifty years of existence. So why has the interior been fully replaced, why does the woodwork look a little shaky, and why does the front door fit look rather poor? The only thing that I can come up with is that it had some rough years before a big chunk of work was done to bring it up to this standard. \r\n\r\nWhat is the upside for the car? Nice presentation in this color; wire wheels and Vredesteins have great visual appeal and improve the handling over the stock items; the interior looks good and will give many years of comfortable service as well as wear in nicely; higher compression head (9:1); a multi-year rolling restoration would improve its value and give years of pleasure if you really are a nuts and bolts car guy (or gal).\r\n\r\nAnd what is the downside? Automatic transmission is a slug-box (I\u2019d upgrade to a 700R or something similar if I wanted the ease of driving that comes from automatics); the paint and body work looks mildly shaky; ditto for the interior work; chrome looks a little tired but that may just be the photography; the spare tire should be replaced; the Sparcomatic radio and speakers kind of cheapens the interior look; and contrary to the BAT description, there appears to be a nasty split/gash in the woodwork to the left of the steering wheel.\r\n\r\nAnd what will it go for? Looking at past BAT auctions and the condition of the cars, I\u2019m guessing it should be around $20k or so (which it is certainly worth IMHO). For a start they are rather unpractical as they have no bottom or sides (yes, you read that right). Basically they are just a \"flap\" that has elastic bands at the top, so when you pull it out from the top, it works basically as a clip that can hold a road map. They are not that complicated to install, but I have seen many Mk2s owners over the years omitting them basically for a cleaner look and perhaps the lack of use (but in a JCNA Concours competition class, where interior is judged, yes, not having them would deduct points). I never use mine (!) as anything thinner that a good old fashioned road map will slip through and end up on the ground next time you open the door (and that will include insurance cards.....). However, if that is a deal breaker, this link gives a great explanation how to install them - and improve them - should that be an inssue http://fairislepress.com/WP/?p=10745\n\nOn the color discussion, yes the grey color may actually be closer to Mist Grey than Cornish Grey, but fact is that the color definition has many elements, and there's a great deal of difference between paint quality and components of 1960's colors and later attempts to match an exact color. For a start single stage paint has a very different gloss and reflection than clear coated modern paint. If you have single stage paint, there are entire forums that can occupy you for days in the debate of how to maintain the shine of that, and to wax or not to wax it etc. For clear coated paint, the depth of the paint changes character completely, and finally, on light color cars , the prep can even influence the pigments, so the color appears lighter or darker. Resprays are resprays, and while we all use common Jaguar color names, facts are that it is very much up to the competence of the painter to hit a color that come close to the original in the 1960's. Even cars with the same color name back then could differ slightly as the guys at Browns Lane didn't always hit the same color spot on either. Painters can elaborate much more on that than me, but today all we can do is trying to match the color shade as closely as possible. So the question about the right shade of grey is very simple: Do you like the color? If yes, is it applied well with no peal and looks great?
