I just know from hard won experience what a 14 gallon original and the later 16 gallon tanks look like. With the 14 gallon tank the muffler fit between the tank and the right frame rail, and the sending unit opening was perfectly vertical. With the 16 gallon tank the right side filled out to add capacity so the muffler had to move elsewhere ( on some of the cars it was transversely between the axle and the fuel tank, wagons were likely different) and the sending unit opening ended up at more of a 60 degree angle (so the wiring and the fuel line cleared the transverse muffler). This car has the hallmarks of a true Sprint but I do have some comments/questions here (and this only pertains to the 1963.5 Sprints). Just to be blunt from start, there is nothing in data plate or VIN that identifies a \u201cSprint\u201d \u2026 the numbers will only confirm if a car is NOT a Sprint (similar to a Mustang GT, must be a 4bbl V8 to be true GT, thus either an A or K code).\nThe \u201c63C\u201d code on data plate does not designate a \u201cSprint\u201d but rather a \u201chardtop with bucket seats\u201d (it\u2019s a body-type code). As all Sprints had bucket seats this code must be present but note that Futura Sport Coupes also had this same \u201c63C\u201d code but they could be had with either a V8 or I6 (Sprint Convertibles and Futura Sports Convertibles had \u201c76B\u201d body code) \u2026so that is the second all important part of decoding a Falcon, the \u201cF\u201d in VIN designating a V8 equipped car. All Sprints were fitted with V8s so an \u201cF\u201d must be present in VIN\u2026but now you only really know that you have either a Sprint or Futura Sports Coupe (or convertible). At this point, Sprints are really then just a trim difference from the V8 fitted Futura Sports Coupe/Convertibles. Sprints have interior and exterior \u201cSprint\u201d badging, the wood-like \u201cSprint\u201d badged steering wheel (not an option available on Futuras), dash-top 6K tachometer (reads \u201cSprint\u201d \u2026if you ordered the optional tach for your Futura it was a \u201cRotunda\u201d and later repops often go to 8K), the 260 was fit with chrome dress up package, and Sprints read \u201cFALCON\u201d across tail panel rather than \u201cFUTURA.\u201d This last point is where you can often spot a clone, look inside trunk and see if any evidence including no longer used or modified holes are present that may indicate that somebody replaced the \u201cFUTURA\u201d lettering for \u201cFALCON.\u201d A photo of back panel from inside trunk would be good for this sale.\n Another note here, way to quickly spot a clone when data plate or VIN is not visible \u2026 all V8 Falcons had a block off plug where choke pull is found on I6 cars as the 260s fit to Falcons in 1963.5 had automatic chokes. Dash still reads \u201cCHOKE\u201d but there is the telltale plug instead of a knob\u2026if you see five matching knobs to right of steering wheel, you are likely looking at a car that was originally an I6\u2026leads to a question on this car, there is a mismatched \"5th\" knob where choke plug should reside, was an aftermarket manual choke fit when the 4bbl was added (see pic 74)? You have \u201cF\u201d in VIN so this is an original V8 car so clearly a retro-fit of some sort here. \nFor the record, I\u2019m not a potential buyer, I have a 1963.5 Sprint ragtop with 4 speed already as well as a 1967 GT500 \u2026 just a longtime Ford owner (Shelby since 1977) and learned long ago how to read the codes and identify various models of Mustang and Falcon. When I sold it a Falcon afficionado close to me saw the ad and came to look at it. Turns out a friend of his used to own the car. He was way more knowledgeable than me in determining that it was a real Sprint. We looked in the trunk and then under the hood and he pointed out that the inner fender on the driver side had numbers that indicated a 6 cylinder. On closer inspection we could tell that it had been welded in. Paperwork that his friend gave me indicated the car had sold for $50 at one point, my guess is that it was in an accident. The OEM cap for lower line Falcons as I recall was painted body color with either a chrome or body color rectangular bar to use to twist on and off. A few years ago I ran into a retired gentleman at a BMW performance center event who advised he was the manager of the sprint project at Ford.
