It needed a lot of work, but Maseratis are so well-built, with ample parts and technical support available, it wasn\u2019t long before we were shaking it down on the open road. \r\n\r\n Favorite story: Ours had a persistent over-heating problem, some Boras do that. But after a month of interventions like unclogging the air vent hose in the A-pillar, flushing the tunnel pipes, verifying the thermal switches and fans were operating, adding Water Wetter, unclogging the thermostat housing vent, re-bleeding the cooling system and removing - of all things - two adapter plates in front of the radiator for the AC evaporator.. it seemed finally to stop overheating. \r\n\r\nFast forward to a hot August afternoon, leaving a fundraiser on Lake George with a bunch of other exotics. Stuck in tourist traffic through the village, the temp gauge was creeping concerningly high. If only we could get to the Northway, it would cool off! The Bora didn\u2019t overheat in traffic, we got to the Northway, but as we reached proper highway speeds, the temperature stayed stubbornly pegged high. My friends all floored their exotics and we were left behind wanting the engine to cool down. \r\n\r\n Instead, in a moment of impulsiveness, I downshifted and floored it, to keep up with our buddies - if I was going to overheat I at least wanted to do it spectacularly! \r\n Horsepower and confident, planted steering took care of the distance so it didn\u2019t take long for the Bora to catch up. I noticed how fast we were going, got a little concerned, and cautiously looked at the temperature gauge and burst out laughing... \r\n.. at around 140 the temperature was dropping rapidly! \r\n\r\n Of course! .. the system isn\u2019t designed for optimal cooling at the plodding speeds of US highways: It\u2019s designed to cool at Autostrada speeds! \r\n\r\nLesson learned: If your vintage Maserati is overheating, please drive faster. Much faster. \r\n\r\n766 looks to be an excellent example, retaining the patina and hallmarks of a nearly unmolested original.
