Back when I was looking for seats I thought plain black seats would be too dull in my all black Mini and the Corbeaus solved that problem quite well. \n\nThis car may be a bit loud color-wise for some tastes, but so what! Although I stay with traditional paint schemes on my Minis I do have plans for aviation-themed roof art on my next race car. Putting a Balkenkreuz on a car may be politically/socially unacceptable to some (versus just being boy racer, or gauche, or cool), but I think it helps to know its history. Possibly the most important fact is that the Balkenkreuz (loosely translated as bar-cross) did not originate as a Nazi symbol. It came into German military use in 1918 as an urgent and immediate replacement for the plain black (i.e., no white border) curved-sided iron cross (technically a Cross Patt\u00e9e) on German aircraft because the latter was not easy to recognize in combat. Its curved sides made it too readily confused with British and French markings that had a generally round form. Apparently seeing the curved shapes visually registers the same as seeing a round shape in the heat of the moment. (Changing markings mid-conflict is not uncommon, the red center of the US aircraft star and bars marking was removed early in WWII because it was too easy to confuse with a red sun emblem.) The Balkenkreuz was dropped at the end of WWI and then used again by the Third Reich. It\u2019s important to note that there was no German air force between the wars, so it may have been a matter of simply picking up where they had left off. And it was already proven that the iron cross of Prussian origin was not easily identified in combat. It is documented that the German army initially used a plain white cross to mark their ground vehicles at the start of WWII, but they switched to the Balkenkreuz with its segmented white areas because a white cross made an excellent aiming point for the enemy. The Balkenkreuz continued till the end of WWII and when the Luftwaffe was reformed into the post-war Bundeswehr they went to a hybrid of the curved-sided iron cross combined with the white/black border of the Balkenkreuz. There was obviously some political and social sensitivity to retaining the straight sided Balkenkreuz. And visual recognition of aircraft markings was less important at that point with the introduction of radar, IFF, etc., so reverting to the hybrid iron cross appears to have made political, social and operational sense.\n\nCurrent practice on many (but not all) restored or replica WWII German aircraft is to either leave the tail blank where the swastika would have been or use the GDR tricolor in its place, but to leave the Balkenkreuz intact. https://www.plane-encyclopedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Bf-109-Hispano-Built.jpg As a side note the Finnish Air Force used a blue swastika as their insignia starting in 1918, so they preceded the Third Reich in the use of that symbol.
