Click on the dyno graph at the link below. Their comparison of the SW10 camshaft to an MD286, which I have used, means that it should be reasonably civilized for street use. I like the MD286, so I might need to try an SW10! The seven-port head will add something but I don't think it will be a massive hp or torque increase, not that it needs to be when you start with 125/108 numbers. What I like, and what the big bore motors are good for, is the torque curve. It looks like it's above 90 ft-lbs for most of the useable rev range. Nice, very nice! In my opinion these are better than the later plastic latches. Since this in not a restoration to stock, I think their use is most appropriate. When I restore my 67 S there are two places where I would deviate from stock 1967: one is by installing the earlier chrome window latches; and the other, by installing the earlier stainless wheel surround trim pieces instead of the plastic 1967 items.\n\nThe mirrors are attached using the holes used by the latches. This is to avoid drilling holes in the body. Of course if you\u2019ve seen Rachel and Andy\u2019s Minis you know they arrived at the big time long ago. Anyway, Rachel sent me some pictures of this Mini at the 2004 Mini Meet West. It was a very nice car then and it\u2019s an even better car now. I also received an unexpected email from a long time Miniast that lurks on BaT. He\u2019s also a long time acquaintance of Dennis Obee and he vouched for the quality of his work, as did Rachel. The quality of this Mini is readily evident in the picture gallery here, but it\u2019s always reassuring to hear it from folks with first-hand experience.\n\nGiven the great combination of parts and overall fit and finish on this Cooper I am left with not much more than miscellaneous observations, not that that\u2019s ever stopped me from commenting! First off, it\u2019s very difficult to fit air filters on a Mini with a cross flow head (without bulging the bonnet) but it can be done. The 2004 pictures show this car fitted with filters and I\u2019d go that route if it were mine. But I live in an extremely dusty place.\n\nI know we aren\u2019t nit picking originality on this car, but I thought I\u2019d add that the chrome window tracks used here are for the later plastic latches. The earlier chrome latch tracks have a series of holes that the latch pin drops into. The plastic latches have a friction lock that engages the track and doesn\u2019t need the series of holes to hold the window in position. With no holes for the chrome latches to engage the windows can vibrate open or closed while driving, but that\u2019s more of a problem as the window felts age and lose their grip. (Likely not an issue here!) The expedient fix for that, from experience, is to wedge something between the two window panes. Also from experience with window tracks with no felt or fabric left, a pack of matches or a pack of cigarette papers wedged between the panes works well to hold the windows in place and stop the incessant rattling. That\u2019s why the Zig Zag man is painted on the roof of my Cooper, a carryover from the window \u201clatch\u201d. (By the way, for several decades I smoked Flying Dutchman pipe tobacco rolled in cigarettes, so reaching into the door pocket of my Mini only got you some tobacco. On most days, anyway.) Again, I\u2019m not nit picking this Mini, and I love how it still keeps the original Mini \u2018flavor\u2019 while being quite heavily modified. Did anyone notice how the boot floor board is modified to fit over the wider-than-usual spare tire? That\u2019s a nice little detail.\n\nI also mounted a Raydyot mirror to the forward window latch when I first got my Cooper 50 years ago. That didn\u2019t last long because the mirror would \u201cgo out of adjustment\u201d depending on where the window was set. I also loathe drilling holes in body shell and have since used the Stadium Overtaker mirrors that clip to the A-pillar flange.\n\nConcerning straight cut gears, aside from strength another reason to use them on high output Minis is that helical cut gears generate side forces that the thrust washers may not be able to take. This is especially true with the center gear of the drop gear set although it can also affect the transmission gears. I have welded helical drop gears to their thrust washers on several occasions, and straight cut gears don\u2019t have that problem. As a side note the later \u2018B\u2019 type gears in the standard transmissions have a shallower helical angle than the earlier \u2018A\u2019 type gears and I often wondered if BMC reduced the angle to lessen the side loads as the Cooper engines upped the power from the 850. \n\nFinally, I have a Mini with Cobra seats and I can fit my not insubstantial butt (6\u2019 0\u201d and 220 lbs) into them without much effort and no pain. The real drawbacks are that the seat squab is too short to provide any meaningful support under my legs for long drives, and the seat brackets don\u2019t allow sufficient rearward adjustment for me. Custom brackets such as this car has would help a lot, although I would likely have a little more rearward rake on the seat. But that\u2019s the nice thing with custom hardware; you can tailor it to suit. \n\nThe car with the Cobra seats is actually a predecessor to this one from almost 40 years ago. Built by the other half of S&M Minis it hails from Ontario, is a 1380 with 11.0:1 CR, a 544 cam (aka, Formula Junior cam), straight cut everything, similar suspension mods, and similar wheel/tire/flare setup. It was about as radical as you could go with a street Mini in 1979, but still useable. Don drove it from Toronto to California and back twice, and then to Colorado where it has lived since. He sold it to finance his Amal-carbed, 649 (equivalent) cammed, eight-port street Mini, which he still has, a car that went just a little too far. This color combination is one of my favorites, I\u2019ve done two cars for customers in OEW over Island Blue. Best of all it\u2019s easy to live with over the long run, it doesn\u2019t seem to get old.\n\nThe machined steering column adjuster seems like a good idea as the old strap style ones really can flex sideways a bit. What I learned over time is to not hang on the steering wheel for support, just use it for steering and it won\u2019t do a lot of flexing sideways. A seat with good lateral support reduces the need to hang onto the steering wheel and the race cars have a hell for stout column support welded to the roll cage.\n\nI like the mastic on the bottom of the car, that\u2019s the way I do all on my street cars. It provides more protection and is easier to maintain than a painted bottom. It also seems to provide some damping to the floor pan that keeps the interior quieter.\n\nAlong the lines of being quieter the two box exhaust system seems like a good idea (and it\u2019s very well made) and this Mini is noisier in the drive-by video when approaching (straight cut gears) than going away. I suspect it also helps damp out harmonics that can be very annoying in a Mini. I spend a lot of time chasing down and eliminating the source of harmonics in my street Minis and the exhaust system can be a significant source. It\u2019s not just the decibel level but how the different pieces resonate with the body structure at different speeds. That can really makes a difference on a thousand mile drive. Don and I drove to MMW in 1980, he in the red 1380 (terribly noisy inside) linked in a previous post and me in my 997 (relatively quiet). We found that if I drove just off his left rear quarter at 70 to 75 mph a really strong resonance would set up between the two cars. Wah-wah-wah-wah inside the cars, we\u2019d play with it on the really boring stretches. One night in San Fran we were driving towards the Golden Gate Bridge when a guy comes down an on ramp in a Honda 600 going like gangbusters to catch up with us. We slowed a bit and positioned him in between our cars, and he seemed to enjoy the moment. Then the resonance set in even with the extra car between us \u2013 wah-wah-wah-wah. We held that position for 15 or 20 seconds before blasting away and later wondered what is sounded like inside the Honda. Could we have disintegrated the car if we held it there long enough?\n\nAll in all it seems like someone knew what they were doing with this car, lots of little things done the right way to make it livable.\n\nOne thing I do not like is an oil catch tank in a fender well. It won\u2019t matter much in a street car with minimal blow-by but I\u2019ve had several bad experiences with them in race cars. If the can fills the overflow goes back the rocker panel and straight onto the rear tire. Once at Pueblo (1380 motor suffering bore flex and blow-by at high revs) and a second time at Mid-Ohio (weak head gasket pressurizing the sump slightly) I ended up sailing backwards off fast corners after the rear tire oiled on the straight. Pueblo isn\u2019t a big deal, lots of open space on the outside of the corner and a bit of traction on the dirt. But Mid-Ohio was a different and very uncomfortable story \u2013 no idea how close I am to the barrier and zero traction on the grass. I have only driven the car for approx 50 miles since here in Miami is a very brutal hot weather, I am waiting to have a cooler weather starting in December to really start enjoying it. I am almost sure there is NOT a nicer Austin Cooper S in the world than this one, there is just no words to describe the level of quality this little machine was done. The mechanical is just impressive, the torque and HP, drives you to heaven. The engine and transmission drives so well and strong, that I immediately got in contact with the builder to start building another one to be used in another 1992 Rover Mini Cooper I have .
