Ive own many of them. The 258 is a great 6cyl engine that was around for a long time and what evolved into the 4.0 that was still in production in jeep wranglers until 2006. We built one up with 10:1 compression, 520 lift hyd cam, fully ported head, offy 4bbl intake with a 650 holley, clifford dual outlet header, HEI ignition, true dual exhaust into an X pipe with dual flowmaster mufflers out the back, 2500 stall, 3.54 posi in a 74 gremlin X levi edition. That thing sounded like a healthy V8. We would pull in with it at a show or local drive and shock the crap out of people when we popped the hood on it and they saw it was a 6. It would pull real hard up over 6000 rpm and would smoke both tires for a good distance and still get upper teens for mpg. They find, refurbish, and take a financial risk on cars that have soul.\r\n\r\nThat soul comes from being rode hard, but not too hard, and put up wet, but not so wet that they can\u2019t be dried off and given a chance at a whole new life.\r\n\r\nThis \u201977 Gremlin with its 4-speed, primer painted hood and non-functioning A/C will attract more views and comments in its humble seven days before us than a super coupe with a Deviated Stitching Package, illuminated carbon fiber gas cap, or sun visors upholstered with the scrotum of color matched Rhineland plow oxen.\r\n\r\nThe Gremlins, Mercury Zephyrs, Ford Fairlanes, and Dodge Colts are the ones we learned to drive in, survived high school with, lost virginities in, purchased with payments we weren\u2019t sure we\u2019d be able to actually make and became our partners on the journeys that defined our early lives.\r\n\r\nThey were not special ordered, picked up at the dealership, driven to a climate controlled storage facility to be looked after by a paid technician prior to being resold to someone else.\r\n\r\nCars like this one were like your first dog. That pooch you got from the pound had more personality and was a better partner than whatever the breed that won the Westminster ever thought about being.\r\n\r\nJason knows that and is better at tapping into that yearning for yesteryear than most any other dealer on BaT. I remember one I had bought as a joke throw away beater, it was a 1972, Gremlin X 4 speed 304, I bought off the original owner, a college grad that was given the car to go away to schools with, who cane back an landed a great job right away in 77, that wanted a new Trans Am, where the dealer wanted to give him nothing in trade! Well seeing as he was a cousins boyfriend-future spouse, I got it for a song, during a dark time in my life money was an issue. Well I bought the car an drove it around a few months, actually raced the previous owner in his new Trans-Am 6.6,automatic, that just barely beat me! He was so pissed he didn\u2019t blow my doors off! But after it was so close, I vowed to myself I\u2019d beat that Trans-Am if it was the last thing I did! So I ended up at a new Trailer Truck Driver in a Union Barn making decent money as a line hauler, but was never home except weekends! So for a whole winter of commuting on Sunday night to work an Thursday night home saving everything I could. That summer as it slowed down after a few more drivers were added, I ended up with a couple more nights home each week! So I took enough of my savings to build a Gremlin XXX! I used a 350 Chevy truck engine, a 4 bolt main I out 202 heads on with Edelbrock manifold, headers, Holley 4 brl, Accell Ignition System and a Ford rear end a buddy had from his daze at a local speedway, it had 4:10 Posi! I ended up beating him sooo bad! He could not believe it! He ended up following me home later on the highway and wanted to see how fast his Trans-Am was over the quick Gremlin! He ended up walking away from me in 4 th gear, when he shifted into his 4th at 110! Then I was at 5,000 rpm an backed down! All I can say is I had so much fun with that silly car! I ended up blowing the engine up one night and sold the car. The kid I sold it to ended up installing a n Eagle AWD powertrain in it! I know he got it running, nice and high off the ground an passed inspection!
