I would have to check my sales brochures and factory service manuals but the 4 speed was available well into at least the 1981 model year in the U.S. If I recall beginning in 1982 the 5 speed was standard in the U.S. but the 4 speed could still be found in Canada. \n\nI have seen some unusual base model configurations over the years. One of my current 280zx's is an '81 with manual windows, manual steering, no 10 function check, no cc or pdl. It even has an all black interior just like this one. Drilling lots of little holes this low on any Z car is an invitation to rust even in a dry climate. \n\nThis car might be a great entry into the Z car scene and most of what this car needs mechanically can be dealt with quickly and inexpensively. The EGR valve looks to be missing and at this point I would complete the removal and install a block off plate. Given the mileage and age it may also need intake/exhaust manifold gaskets and studs. It can be a daunting task for the driveway which is why I prefer to pay a professional and while at it you can replace lots of hoses and vacuum lines.\n\nI am old enough to remember when Midori held a contest where they gave away a citrus green 280zx back in 1979. Rare color and until this one I had only seen one on Sacramento craigslist about a month ago for around $2k. I raced a 280zx in SCCA SSA competition and I can speak to their durability. We finished second at the Longest Day (24Hours of Nelson Ledges). As I recall, all we really had to do after finishing the 24hr was to bleed the brakes, repack the front wheel brgs, and replace that little plastic shifter bushing. Great cars.
