The only issue on the M series is the round tube at the front of the bonnet is still glassed in and is prone to corrosion. On mine, a '76, the glass was cracking because of corrosion on the tube. The cracks on the bonnet and possibly the fit likely point to an impact of some sort. An easy way to check would be to look at the hinges and how the bonnet is attached. As I mentioned earlier, the bonnet has a glassed in round tube running the width of the bonnet. As well, there are smaller pieces running from the ends of the tube to the the areas near the head lamps. If the glass is broken here, that could indicate a small shunt. If it has been repaired, perhaps whoever did the repair, didn't get the alignment correct. I'll add that these can be very reliable. I drive mine from Ohio down into the south, through Texas and up the coast to Seattle in one trip over ten days and it never missed a beat. The entire drivetrain and many of the electrical parts were sourced from BMC/BLMC/Triumph. Although there is some bad news (Lucas), there is also some good news in that a lot of parts are still available thanks to the popular TR6, and many vehicle specific parts are available from other suppliers. The engine sits well behind the front wheels, providing good front/rear balance, but the driver sits a little farther back, just in front of the rear wheels, making the ride more like an E-type than a Triumph. It isn't unpleasant, but it does take a little to get used to. These cars are all fiberglass, I believe, with a racing-style tube-frame chassis. The tube-chassis is subject to rust in a few places, but it is pretty easy to fix and, Like Lotus, the large center console is actually covering the central tube frame. In spite of that console, they are still fairly comfortable on smooth roads and my 6'3\" frame fits fairly easily. Once in, these cars are a genuine blast to drive. They were, after all, designed and built to handle better than any other British car of the time-period...and for the most part, they do! \nIf you like british cars, can't afford a Jag or Lotus, and don't want to be one of 40 or 50 triumphs and MGs at the local classic car show, then this might be the car you are looking for. These are a tube chassis, specifically a space frame, and the nomenclature for the layout is a front mid engine with the engine lying well back from the front wheels. The M series chassis and body attachment are different than pre-M cars. First off, the bulk of the tubes are square rather than the round section used on previous TVRs. The earlier cars had their bodies attached to the chassis in a sort of GRP Superleggera style, with the glass wrapped around the tubes. The M series used metal plates, commonly of 3/16\" thickness glassed into the body mounting points which were through bolted to the chassis. As well, the M chassis uses rubber pads between the chassis and the body, making these cars very durable. Rust, beyond surface scale, is really only a problem in two areas. One being the round tube bonnet mounting and stiffener at the bottom leading edge of the bonnet, and the fuel tank. The latter can be prone to corrosion if the car is not dry stored or the fuel is allowed to sit for long periods. The M also benefited from larger door openings. The suspension uprights and A arms are things to behold. The uprights being very rigid cast aluminum pieces. Parts are and were sourced from a variety manufacturers, including BL as you mentioned, but also Ford. The windscreen of the Ms was from a Ford Zephyr. The odd man out is the rear glazing which was specially fabricated, in Nigeria, of all places. Although this nice one may have had a minor shunt in its history as indicated by the bonnet cracks and indifferent fit, the bonnet was designed with a ridge where it meets the body above the foot wells so that any imprecise fit is less obvious. As far as handling,these cars inspire great confidence. But for the unwary, they can spin easily due to the very short wheelbase and wide track. Just keep the boot in it and don't let off. But, I\u2019m only aware of leather upholstery being available on the 3000ML and that was only a 1974 model. That was also the variant that came with a wooden fascia so I would guess that this one has enjoyed some attention.\r\n- bumpers on mine are actually foam - which is a pia as they crack with age. Replacements are unobtanium.\r\n- I\u2019ve never seen one with AC! Great for warmer climates as it does get hot inside.\r\n- electric overdrive was available as an option in the UK, actuated by a switch on top of the gear knob. Great for relaxed cruising but embarrassing when you forget to switch it off and engage someone in a traffic light challenge!\r\n- excellent car for someone who likes to tinker and has alternative transportation. Only 67 LHD models produced, the balance of 191 were RHD. And original bumpers can still be purchased through David Gerald Sports Cars, England. You might have to wait, as I did for about three months, but I have brand new from the original mold bumpers. They are not exactly inexpensive. Not good when it is raining but cured by using adhesive instead of sealant around the rubber mounting strip. I sold my '76 in the early 90s for slightly more than half this price. Although the Griffiths command much higher prices, they are not the car that the M series is. Sure, more power like the Ac Cobra with the 427. But as with the later, I prefer the 289. Much better balanced. TVRs have much better GRP build than Lotus's of the same period. As far as reliability, the M series has really fewer issues than other cars of the period. These are very easy cars to work on. And whether it is powered by the Kent motor(my favorite) or the Essex or the Triumph 2.5, there is really nothing to go wrong. The chassis is robust and well made. Of course, there are complaints about fit, but would argue that is the price of a handmade car. And these cars sold at about the same price of a TR 6.
