The oil leak is just a drop or two, but it seems to have started right after the AC compressor failure. I will update once I verify where the leak is coming from. The transmission was done by Ron's Transaxle in San Pablo, CA. in 2007.\r\nI performed the engine rebuild which was completed in mid 2020. The American sedan was doing its' best to stay on the right side of the road, but the Scirocco was right up his tailpipe. After 2-3 mins of tangling with the overweight, understyled beast my dad took an opening and passed on a left sweeper. Being the model of restraint I waved vigorously from the back seat as we sailed away. As I stood inside the store, I watched a group of young kids having some sort of a street fight/rumble surround my car. I ran outside screaming and they all ran away.\r\n\r\nI was left with a six inch dent in the roof, from the middle of each door back to the hatch. The police were called, a report was filed and my friends gave their condolences.\r\n\r\nAs I went to leave, I got in the car and angrily slammed the door. The windows were up and the resulting pressure wave inside the car popped the dent out almost completely. Only two small wrinkles near each door remained, you could barely see them. I was 20 years old. Dad gave it to me. Someone traded it in as down payment on a new manufactured home. It had 9K miles. Cosmos Silver. It was a wonderful car. I owned it for 10 years. Had around 200K miles on it when I traded it to a friend for a 1985 Scirocco. The '81 was very versatile. You could pack it full of stuff like a mini wagon. I moved from Oklahoma to Glendale CA in this car. Packed so full that I couldn't see out the rear mirror. The mirror was one of those multiple mirrors for racing. The one that stretched all the way across the car. No blind spots! I installed a set of GTI 14\" wheels like these. I put an Ansa dual exhaust tip on it in place of the muffler. It was very loud! I could drive through a parking garage and rev it up and set off the car alarms! I couldn't sneak up on anyone. Put Zender side skirts and a Zender rear spoiler on it. A Scirocco GT badge. A scoop over the hood vents in front of the windshield. Not for engine cooling, but for interior flow through ventilation. It worked! I found a set of huge square Euro headlights and grill. Had huge Hella rectangular driving lights under the front bumper and 7\" round Hella fog lights on top of the bumper. Found a set of yellow headlight bulbs, like they have in France. Really made a difference in the snow. Speaking of snow, it was great in the snow. You use the parking brake to slide the back end out and modulate your sideways slide with the throttle. The throttle body was replaced with a Weber Big Throat. Bumpers, hood scoop, side skirts all painted Cosmos Silver. Bumpers had a red pinstripe. Once in the snow, I hit a patch of deep snow and it ripped the front airdam off the car and I ran over it. Not a fun night. Replaced it with a deeper front dam, Kamei I think, with an offset vent hole in it. Once, when living in Dallas, the engine quite running. Took it to the dealer. Said that I had broken the key on the end of the crankshaft. This was 89 or 90. Cost was about $700, if I remember. I couldn't afford that. A mechanic said that he works on VW's at his house. He said he could JB Weld the pulley onto the end of the crankshaft for a lot less $$. That was around 180K miles. It was still holding strong when I traded the car with over 200K miles. Great car. Many many memories. Spinning it while taking a turn too fast on the Ft. Rucker base in TX. Oh yeah, I had a killer stereo system. Blaupunkt cassette deck. Blaupunkt equalizer. Amp under the passenger seat. Awesome speakers. My friend Steve Mays, owner of Reno's Radio in Norman OK worked late to get it all installed. Went to dinner with my girlfriend and back to her place. Next morning, I looked out the window and saw that the doors were open on my Scirocco. Ran outside and found that my cassette deck and EQ was stolen. My stomach fell into my feet. They didn't get the amp. Hidden under the seat. If I remember, the speakers were untouched. I loved that car.\r\n\r\nIn 1987, my wife encouraged me to get a scissors lift, as she worried about my working on a car with jackstands. Not long after we got it, we built a new house. I had a recessed area built in the new garage that was deep enough to allow the arms to be flush with the floor, as I was working on cars that were low to the ground. We buried the hydraulic fluid line to the reservoir. \r\n\r\nIt worked great for brake work and items on either end of the car. Not so great for any work on things in the center of the car due to all of that metal being in the way. It was great for dropping the motor out of a 911, as the engine was hanging out over the rear. \r\n\r\nI have a two post lift in our current house where I have 12\u20194\u201d ceilings. This 1981 Scirocco S, the last year of the MK1, will not disappoint the new owner. In the past week, I have been driving it almost daily for two reasons: \r\n1. To make sure that the car starts and runs perfectly and it has. Aside from the AC not working, everything else is in good working order. The engine purrs when accelerating. Steady idles with smooth acceleration. This car is missing nothing. All that it needs is to have the included AC compressor installed. I have sourced the seats material all the way from the UK and had them installed in Mountain View Ca. I can't think of anything that will be needed to get into this car and drive anywhere. I would hate to see this car modified and deviates from its original feel and looks. \r\n2. I started driving it daily to have my last week with this amazing car.
