Viewing it at some angles and under some lighting conditions, it does sometimes exhibit a very slight shade difference. This color (like silver) is a tough one to determine if repainted. For example, take the very similar shade of color on the 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400SV (painted in Oro Metallizzato \u2014 one of 21 produced on that color) that was sold for a record $4,270,000 by Gooding & Co at their Hampton Court Palace auction in the UK on Sept. 5, 2020. The paint on the Miura appears to have slight shade differences on some panels depending on the photo angle. This one is in such nice shape I cannot understand why you're parting with it, unless you have an even nicer one in the wings! \r\nHaving known the seller since 1989, when I was helping launch the then- new Chrsyler LH series of sedans, under the leadership of Bob Lutz, out of the Bramelea Ont. plant outside Toronto, this man KNOWS Citroens inside & out. \r\n \r\nBack then Dupont was supplying a brand new high-tech plastic that Chrysler was using for the very sharp-nosed front fenders on all three models of the series in order to achieve a radical design which would have been very difficult to produce in steel, plus the co. was near bankruptcy for a second time after Iacocca, and the molded fenders shaved several million $ off the tooling costs. Being Dupont's consultant then on the fenders with their design team, I spent many nights in a hotel near the plant and would go to the Citroen club meets in Toronto where Citroprez was indeed the club President. George had a lively group and we always had a great time discussing maintenance & repair tips and problems to watch out for, as the cars were then about 17 yrs old, and we all did a lot of our own work. Ever since then, George and others have kept a national club alive and launched the website Citroenvie, where anyone can join and learn a helluva lot about the cars. \r\n\r\nWhen first introduced in 1970, the SM was a rare breed, capable of 140 mph out of the box, with features no other car had at that time, and still has lots of incredibly innovative features which no other car incorporates. Check out Leno's video on his 5 speed SM. Jay appreciates the gearbox, as one of - if not the slickest - 5 speeds ever made. The price back then, out of the box - was around $13,000 - give or take a few hundred. Compare that with other high buck cars of 1970-72. Considering all the features of the car, nothing else could come close to its features, as few cars even today do. And the fantastic engineering of these marvels go way deep into their construction. Can anyone name another car where every single suspension arm is mounted - not in cheap rubber bushings - but tapered rollerbearings?? There is no other car built ever that has the precision and permanent alignment of the suspension on these cars. Why did they use the most expensive bearings ever in a car? Because the very long trailing arms at the rear, and extreme wheel travel of front and rear suspensions - about 10 inches - are what give the car the amazingly soft, compliant, yet truly critically damped, suspension which outperforms all others. Rubber bushings would simply have disintegrated in a very short life if they had been asked to rotate that much distance and at the superb reaction speed of the hydropneumatic suspension. Not to mention the fact that, if rubber was used to mount the two foot long trailing arms at the rear, the car would have wobbled all over the road from their flexibility vs steel rollerbearings. The monocoque body shell is machined on all suspension mounting points prior to assembly, to insure perfect alignment of all wheels - and all those suspension bearings are lubed and sealed for life. In 58 yrs of driving DSs and SMs - many of each - I have never had to service a suspension bearing or done a steering alignment, and I do all my own work. \r\nAs to their performance, around 1984 I met a GM exec who knew my personal car was a Citroen DS. He told me GM had bought an SM back in '72 to study at their Mona Lisa evaluation center in Warren Mich. According to him, that car had a waiting list a mile long, as every GM engineer or whatever who heard about the car wanted to \"evaluate\" the car - they simply couldn't believe how well it performed and how fantastic the ride was. Then the SM was chosen to be Car of the Year by Motor Trend in 1972, which didn't hurt. \r\n\r\nHowever, as @Citroprez says, you need to pay attention when you first drive an SM. The 4 wheel full-power disc brakes - 40 panic stops with a dead engine - can stand the car on its nose and throw you into the dash if y0u don't have your belt on tight. With a brake button lower than the loud pedal, braking is the fastest possible as one only has to swing the toe left - no lifting the leg at all with every other ordinary car - and touch the button which has full power feedback over the travel of 1/2 inch or less. No other car can brake as fast when fractions of a second count! \r\nThen there's the self-centering power steering, which cranks the wheel back to center when released, and becomes harder to turn fast, the faster one goes - an incredibly safe system. Lock to lock is 2 turns only. I doubt there's another car which responds that fast. All one need do is nudge the wheel to turn, so one must learn not to over-react, or you'll be in the weeds in an instant. Once the driver is used to that, it's marvelous. \r\n\r\nAnd be sure to dredge up that old movie \"The Longest Yard\" where Burt Reynolds drives an SM off an elevated bridge and drops it about 8 feet, then roars off to lose the cops before dumping the car in a river. Try that bridge stunt in any other car and you and your ride would be trashed. The system was originally R12 (only thing available at the time) but someone updated it long ago. There is no dry rot to the Michelin tires. The leather is soft and subtle like it was when new. I have applied Leatherique conditioner to the seats and door panels annually. The gearbox shifts perfectly and of course the synchros are OK. I have a hand written note form the previous owner stating that the car was purchased and brought from California to North Vancouver BC, Canada, by Mr. Jamie Coltart. In Vancouver it was taken to base metal at 36,000 miles and painted. After the repaint there was an engine issue and that is when Mr. Bigioni bought the car and had the engine changed from it\u2019s original 2.7 L to a 3.0L one. I don\u2019t know the mileage when the engine was changed. On the appraisal that I have from November 21, 1999, it states the following but I do not have documentation to substantiate. It states: \u201cThe car is in exceptionally fine, professionally restored condition. Documentation with the car indicates that it was restored by \u201cSM World\u201d of California in the early 1980\u2019s. In the late 1980\u2019s the original 2.7 Liter Maserati V-6 engine was replaced with a freshly rebuilt 3.0 Liter engine by the then owner; Aldo Bigioni of Whitby, Ontario. In 1998 the 5-speed manual transmission was completely rebuilt and the car\u2019s present condition reflects an ongoing program of exceptional care and maintenance.\u201d The only thing not working on the car at the moment is the second stage horn that does not activate. And if you paid careful attention to the photo of the driver\u2019s door panel, note there is a remote mirror control joystick. It serves no function as the original style SM remote mirror on the car has no ability for control adjustment. I suspect at one point there was intent to change out the mirror to a remote controlled one. (Some SMs on the West Coast had their remote mirrors swapped out with ones from early 1970\u2019s Olds Cutlass 442. I had a red SM years ago with those mirrors). Perhaps that was even done on this car, but it was reverted back the original type at some point, most likely when repainted. Other than these two items, everything on the car is operational and working as it should. As for the suspension, there is not a valving issue but rather a simple height corrector adjustment if you want the car to sit slightly higher. I preferred to have the car sit just slightly lower in the front for handling. Dave Burnham set it up that way years ago. This SM is reliable and set-up to drive perfectly. I have always approached any maintenance on the car with the mindset you would servicing an aircraft. That is: You do all that needs to me done, when working on the engine, brakes and suspension, and don't do things piece-meal. And of course, do it competently. As the ad states, great care has been taken to have servicing done by qualified Citroen experts. Dave Burnham and David Hume can both vouch for its mechanical integrity and exceptional condition. I have driven it 30K miles, sometimes on two-week trips, and not had any issues. The reason I am selling the car is that storage costs vs the actual time I drive it locally has made me see the practical side of continued ownership. This SM has been a great source of pleasure and pride for me, but with the recently reduced speed limits just imposed in Ontario, (country roads with 80 mph speed limits in the area I love have just been reduced, some now as low as 40 mph) and with horrendous traffic in the Toronto area, I find it is no longer the environment here to enjoy the SM\u2019s capabilities. And with the Covid restrictions, it doesn\u2019t look like I\u2019m going to be cruising in the USA anytime soon. :( My role in the Citroen community has been discussed at length here. And if you've never driven one of these, you cannot imagine the comfort and stability of this car. The car's extremely large wheel travel range is a big part of its comfort, combined with the hydropneumatic nitrogen gas sphere/strut on each wheel which provides a much more constant spring rate than steel. If you could watch an SM wheel traveling over rough ground, you'd swear the wheels move like a running Cheeta - the body never moves, but the wheels follow the ground like they're on captive rails - following the surface intimately. Many Citroen DS/SM owners enjoy sucking tailgaters hanging on their tail by hitting speedbumps at speeds that would have any other car leaving the ground - it's just fun to watch the followers banging off their roofs thru the rear view mirror. \r\nPlus - the centerpoint pivot of each front wheel directly thru the vertical center of the tire patch means you could hit roadtrash at high speed without the car being deflected from its path, and that's a very strong safety factor. I once blew the L front tire on one of my SMs at 80+ mph on Rte 94 near Madison Wisc. - only reason I knew what happened was the noise when the tire lost half its steel cord tread, which remained attached and thrashed the wheel well so hard I thought I'd lose the fender. Zero effect on steering or braking. I pulled over, found the fender was ok except for black rubber marks all along the side, used the integral jacking system to change the wheel in 10 mins, then finished the trip. Very few people have a total comprehension of the genius of this car. A true SM/DS owner knows he/she is driving the most innovative car ever to hit the road - any kind of road - as these cars don't need FWD to go places others can't handle. I once drove my '59 ID19 DS - the cheapest model - no power steering or pwr brakes, just a manual with the hydropneumatic suspension's features - and was the only one out of my street in Evanston Ill, an hour after Chicago got hit with 24 inches of snow in 24 hrs, starting noon Fri. Feb. of 1967 and ending at noon Sat. Chicago stopped absolutely DEAD. I shifted the ID to max driving height, didn't even clear a path in front of the car parked against the curb. Just pumped it up, charged the snow, dropped it like a Low-rider, lifted to max ht again. charged snow, and repeated - making my own 300 yd path to the recently plowed crossroad. My lowly ID was the only car out of that street for a week. \r\nOnce I made the crossroad, I started pulling V8s out of ditches and snowbanks. The only FWD car back then on the road. Late that afternoon after a bunch of fun and thankful owners who hadn't a clue how the car could do what it could, I and my gradschool roomies drove clear into the center of the Loop, with zero other cars/anything moving. We had a blast going anywhere we wanted! City plows had erected 10 ft high snowpiles all over the town - real dangerous as no one could see around them! They'd already dumped tons of snow into Lk Michigan, yet every intersection corner was piled high. Going down one side street in N. Chicago, I passed 3 cars with their roadside doors & fenders sheared off by one plow! Nothing but window guts showing! \r\nEven Leno calls the DS/SM the most innovative cars ever built, and he's absolutely right - they're just too intelligent for the hoi polloi.
