The tall, skinny 14\" tires, automatic tranny, stock suspension, big steering wheel, and stock seats are exactly how BMW intended it to be in 1974. I had already owned and put a lot of miles on a 1970 BMW 2002 and the E3 was a huge step up in sophistication (confirmed when I later owned another 2002, which seemed very loud and tinny by comparison). That first 1972 Bavaria was a delight to drive -- fun when I had to pass someone but the national 55 mph speed limit robbed us of much of the pleasure of owning one since its natural, comfortable cruise speed seemed to be about 90 mph. I'll sign off with a bit of heresy -- the E39 M5 I owned many years later might have been a more satisfying car overall had it been an automatic. If the journey is more fun than the destination, then sourcing new euro bumpers will be a fun adventure at a conservative estimate of $2500. The seat material and padding are NLA so expect a $1500 minimum trip to the custom upholstery shop. Plan on a complete brake rebuild including lines and master cylinder. Are you good at rebuilding calipers? If not about $450 each from the dealer, the rest are junk. Not to mention all the unmentionables that pop up along the way. The car is so original, however, that I felt guilty tampering with the factory bumpers.\n\n5-speed swap - this is a subjective matter, so we need to be careful with framing the auto as something \"wrong\" with the car. Some people would prefer to keep the original automatic.\n\nSeats - yes, new fabric and horsehair gets expensive, but here's what I've recently (on my 2002), and I highly recommend it... Find a set of used Bav/E9 seats with the same blue fabric, and poach the material from the seat backs, or even the back seat. Drop everything off at your upholsterer, and have him stitch the replacement fabric onto your seat bottoms, along with some new foam. The patina will match the rest of your interior, and it should cost only a few hundred dollars, not the $1500+ you suggest.\n\nBrakes - The minor hiccup has not occurred in a couple of months of puttering around town, so I think it had air in the lines. While rebuilding calipers is never a bad thing, I wouldn't say it's an immediate necessity, nor is it the cause of this hiccup.\n\nAs it sits today, the car is a lovely driver and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the state.
