That's a $79 fix with parts from The Wedge Shop.\nIf I really wanted to get picky, I'd tell you that the white plastic grip on the dipstick is missing.\nWhat's this car like to drive? I think I can tell you. \nNot long ago, I bought 408449, the fifth to the last TR8 ever built, from the original owner, who only drove the car 7,000 miles.\nAge got to some of the car and it was very soft. the shocks and struts needed to be replaced, among other things.\nBut oh my was it an amazing car to drive. Unusually quiet, except for the turbine-like sound from the engine. \nThe age old debate on what to do with cars like this will come up here. \nDo you drive it or preserve it? \nThis car still has the original tires, hoses in the engine bay (do not drive this car again until all the high pressure rubber fuel injection hoses from the fuel tank to each injector has been replaced!), and it is given a thorough safety inspection.\nOn 408449, I did neither. I sold it to a man in the Netherlands with a collection of super low-mileage early '80s British Leyland vehicles. Now my car lives in a small private collection sitting next to a minty fresh classic Range Rover and a Jaguar XJS, among others.\nI couldn't bear to take my car apart and replace the items that aged out. These cars are just not the same once they've been taken apart.\nI have two other TRs, a late TR8, 407912, built same month as this car, and a TR7 V-8 with a ZF four-speed automatic that I built this year. With a little heat and massaging they should regain their original shape. The upholstery is loose as you say, due to the foam deformation over the last forty years. I can only say that the seats were barely sat in over that time period! The rubber bumber blocks are easily replaceable as you comment. And the dipstick was as it is when we bought the car from the original owner, so the white plastic grip must have been lost then.\r\nIn our opinion, the car should be thought of as a museum piece and not driven. I know there will be many comments regarding that statement. Very nice TR8 offered here. TR8s are rare by themselves, but the 81 FI models are even rarer and with this mileage. According to Richard Truett, my 81 is the third to last built, VIN ending 408485 and engine number 797. The last one given to Bob Tullius (Triumph Racer from Group 44) as a gift by Triumph is an hour away from me. I have seen that one in person. That one had 900 miles on it and was stored in his hanger for years until his son moved it to his location. I also have a friend in town who has a July 81 built TR8 with 16k original miles. These are great driving Triumphs and very comfortable. \r\n\r\nNice to see what looks like the original British license plate up front that was used for personal export. I have the same plate LOC681X that is also referenced on the british Motor Heritage. Mine has 18k original miles and I know the original owner who now resides in Florida. He purchased it new at Strathmore dealership in London in April 1982. Imagine trying to find a home for these cars after Triumph went belly up. I need to look at the pics in detail to see if this one has the late version features for the 82 model year that never was. The fabric from the factory was not great to begin with. Non '81 model car seats were of higher quality coverings. They are not available unlike the earlier models which makes them rare hence the importance of seat covers. \r\n\r\nFor comparison, my car was all original like this one but not as nice. The previous owner wanted to drive it so he shipped it to Woody Cooper for a no expense spared refresh of all systems. New aluminum radiator, shocks, bushings, springs, seat foams, headers, Ana\u2019s exhaust and a ton of rubber bits including fuel lines. Runs amazing but it is not a concours queen anymore. It\u2019s a bit of work to turn these back into a safe driver. This one is sure a museum piece unless one wants to refresh it. Woody and his team are amazing! True enough, its somewhat controversial at the time wedge body is decidedly an exercise in period styling. But I personally believe that peculiarity only adds to its decided appeal.\r\n\r\nWhoever is fortunate enough to eventually prevail in this auction will no doubt be sorely tempted to rack up at least a few miles on this fine example before possibly retiring it to a more sedentary existence. My advice to them would be to first perform a thorough tech inspection and then take advantage of your first opportunity to haul it out to an actual road course (...SIR or PIR in the Northwest being good examples) whenever next a local car club is offering one of their track days and truly \u201cget to know\u201d your new TR8. That\u2019s the question. My brother Jay and I (Don) decided to preserve the car but not mothball it. We ran it about 25 miles a year to keep it lubricated and mechanically sound. The seats are it fantastic condition for a 40 year old car that suffered from seat fabric\r\nthat is notoriously lacking in durability. The fabric seat covers on the 1981 TR7 and TR8 was prone to wear. Very few surviving cars have original seat fabric and it\u2019s impossible to find. The seats were preserved from light and wear by being stored in a controlled environment and the seat covers. The covers over the years compresses the seats ( they fit tight) and that is why you see the waves in the fabric and compression on the headrests. When they are set free from the covers, I believe they will relax and the vinyl and foam will expand to tighten the seat covers a bit. If you look at the color of the fabric you can see they have seen very little sunlight. The car was kept covered, in a climate controlled garage most of its life. The worst thing you can do to a car, boat, airplane etc. is not run it. We put synthetic fluids in the car where possible to prevent paint damage and corrosion in the engine bay. We changed fluids as necessary. The paint and clear coat shine as new. The bumpers still retain the factory luster. The underside still have the factory production markings. It\u2019s truly a preserved but loved car. The new owner will enjoy driving or showing it. We even have included a Lucas NOS battery with all the rare TR8 battery bits ready for acid or keep it dry for show only! They are 40 years old and way beyond safe to use.\n(2) Rebuild all the brake and clutch hydraulics -- calipers, cylinders, etc.\n(3) Replace the shocks and struts and consumables in that area.\n(4) Even though the suspension bushings have aged out, I'd probably leave them since the car would see sparse use\n(5) We know the Lucas distributor is a weak point. So, I'd replace the internals, but keep it looking original.\n(6) Send the ECU to TWOA for a rebuild/resolder and head that certain failure off at the pass.\n(7) Change the fuel filter\n(8) Replace the steering column bushing. If it hasn't perished, it will soon.\n(9) Inspect all vacuum hoses and replace anything suspect\n(10) Have radiator recored with a high capacity/high efficiency core. When it comes to cooling, Triumph always gave you just what you needed, and nothing more.
