That would be the Marilyn Monroe of 1953 luxury cars. Brand new. The ultimate in desirability, with curves and peaks in all the right places where the Packard is linear and somewhat staid.\r\n\r\nIs it as desirable as the 1953 Buick Skylark? Not even. The Skylark was Grace Kelly. Stunningly beautiful with classic lines. Certainly worthy of pursuit but with little chance of conquest. Both would go on to attain royalty status.\r\n\r\nIs it as fun as the 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta? Hardly. While the Packard is a punch bowl spiked with rum, the Fiesta is the whole party, complete with a stuffed pi\u00f1ata. The Shirley McLain of the era. A crazy party, but a party, nonetheless.\r\n\r\nIs it as elegant as a Lincoln Premier convertible? Close, but no cigar. The \u201953 Lincoln was the Elizabeth Taylor of that time. Had not yet even hit her prime, but still capable of turning heads on every boulevard on which it cruised. Both would only get better with age.\r\n\r\nNo, this Packard is the Jane Russell of 1953. The transmission shifts a little roughly and could use a service, but we did have this car out on the highway after service. Like a lot of these great old Packards, there's a laundry list of things to do that have been deferred over the years. The convertible (and hardtop) was something of a hybrid between the Junior series cars and the Senior series. The Junior series cars were built on a 122\" wheelbase and, in the case of the sedans, powered by the 288 cu. in eight. The Senior series 300/400 models were 4 door sedans built on the 127\" wheelbase and got the larger eight. The convertible and the hardtop were built on the 122\" wheelbase but got the 327 eight and more deluxe appointments and are often labeled as the 250 series. The hardtop had originally been given the name \"Mayfair\" but no official model name was given to the convertible. As others have pointed out, 1953 saw the introduction of the top of the line Caribbean, of which 750 were built for 1953. In 1954, the 200 series became the Clipper and the hardtop version became the Clipper Panama. The Senior series hardtop became the Pacific, a name used only in 1954. Four hundred examples of the Caribbean were built for 1954. The lower-priced of the 2 Senior series 4 door sedans became the Cavalier in '53 (previously called the \"300\") and the Cavalier name carried over to '54. The top of line in the sedans which had been called the Patrician 400 for '54 became simply the Patrician. \"Patrician 400\" was a reference to the 400 families listed in the New York Social register.
