One was Red (like this one) the other was Fireglow - a red/orange that was more red than orange. It was a color that GM used during that period on many of their models. GM purchased Opel in 1929 and sold them just recently (about 3 -4 years ago.The reason that the Opel GT looks so much like the C3 generation Corvette is because GM sent a team of designers to germany in the mid 60's to design and develop a sports car for its Opel division. The Opel GT concept was introduced in 1966 at the Geneva Auto Show. That design team returned to the states and were responsible for designing the C3 Corvette introduced in 1968. Unlike the Corvette, the Opel GT's were a steel body. The bodies were built by a French company and shipped to Belgium where they were assembled. The running gear was based on the Opel Kadette. In Europe the Opel GT's were raced and rallied very successfully. The 1.9 liter motors in the Opels were pretty bullet proof. The only real issue was the Solex carbs. Most owners switched these out for Webers. If GM had used this motor in the Vega's in the early 70's, they would have been much more successful. But that's another story. Very complete GT in good condition that hasn't been modified. Here are the trouble spots: battery tray rust & battery bouncing around - relo it to near spare under package tray; the headlight mechanism can be testy. I'm sure there are fixes to make turn without binding; the original carbs were a PIA. I took mine off regularly and cleaned. Surely the aftermarket carbs will improve; electrical wasn't always my friend - I melted a fuse panel at one point. Never did figure out why, but it ran okay after fixing it; it was loud and you did smell of gas & oil after a long drive. I'd still love to have another one. Perhaps resto-modded to up HP, maybe a five speed manual, increase creature comforts and improve already ok handling. Fun ride. My original plan was to swap it for a Manta with a decent back seat but GM, about that time, stopped bringing in Opels but instead brought Isuzus into Buick dealers and called them Opels. That didn't last long. The GT is a decent handling car as long as you stayed off snow. Worst car in snow I'd ever driven. I remember running at the drag strip against a V8 Chevelle that was supposedly in my class. I got out in front at first but half way down the track he caught and easily passed me. This was before dial-in drag racing. Probably one of the reasons they went to dial-in. But I digress....
