By then it was a few years old, but no less opulent, and certainly no less storied. It was owned by a couple in town by the name of Bridges. First names escape me, but they are irrelevant.\r\n\r\nThe couple owned the Ben Franklin store and one of only two mortuaries in town. Diverse business interests, to be sure. Employees down at the Stockton Telegram Dispatch, the local newspaper most referred to as the STD, would often snicker that the Bridges could nickel and dime you on either side of the grave. But they were careful not to say that too loudly because the dime store and funeral home represented a significant amount of ad revenue for the Telegram Dispatch, and money talks. Or, stays silent, as needed.\r\n\r\nThe Bridges didn\u2019t actually purchase the Eldorado in town. They went to Marfa and struck the deal at the Pecos Cadillac and Combine dealership so that no one in town would actually know what they paid for it. \r\n\r\nAs if.\r\n\r\nThe county clerk in Marfa went to church with someone whose mother worked in Mason who had a daughter who worked part time at the Telegram Dispatch writing copy. Word of what they spent on the Cadillac got back to town before they did.\r\n\r\nMrs. Bridges never once drove it with the top down. Big Texas hair was nothing to be trifled with, even while surrounded by this much luxury. Mr. Bridges never drove it with the top up. Someone who smoked a pack and a half of Marlboros was not concerned with the effects of too much sun on his bald noggin.\r\n\r\nFolks would make snide remarks about the tufted two-toned black and white interior or the fact that the Eldorado crest plastered on each end of the front bench seat was just slightly smaller than the center table of the Lotta Bull Steakhouse (which would later become the Grounds for Divorce coffee shop) on the square in the middle of town.\r\n\r\nBut deep down in places their baptist minister never knew about, they all wished they could experience the feeling of being behind the wheel of the Cape Ivory convertible, sun gleaming off the dash and steering column, blinding them to the monotony of the life that surrounded them. \r\n\r\nThere was no more magnificent monument to materialism available to the masses in Mid-Century America.\r\n\r\nThis Cadillac is stunning. And it has aged incredibly well. Better, in fact than the Bridges. They ended up selling both the Ben Franklin franchise and the funeral parlor when it was discovered that Mrs. Bridges had been carrying on with the embalmer in the basement after hours, challenging the theory, \u2018what doesn\u2019t kill you makes you stronger\u2019.\r\n\r\nThe Cadillac was included in the sale of the Five and Dime and remained parked on the square in the middle of town until the 70s as an advertisement for the store.\r\n\r\nThe new owners of the funeral home installed one of the county\u2019s first crematoriums shortly after taking over. Few around town missed the irony when the original owners of the parlor were among the first to take advantage of the new technology, meeting their maker six months apart, she from some unknown chemical poisoning and he from skin cancer.\r\n\r\nDown at the Piggly Wiggly you can still hear the occasional joke about the town burning its own Bridges.\r\n\r\nBest of luck with the auction of this magnificent Cadillac.
