I was very fortunate to find this \"survivor\" in California at the end of 2018. The previous owner passed in 2018 and his son shared some very special memories of growing up with \"dad's Kawasaki\". The bike is truly 99% original and retains all of the original items unique to the \"early 72 Z1's\" including the unstamped exhaust, ribless carbs, and the extremely rare original head with the very early vacuum ports. Even the seat cover is original. The bike was last ridden in 1979. The handful of rubber and plastic parts that I replaced are period correct NOS parts. The engine and transmission were fully disassembled to determine if any issues existed and reassembled using only new rings, clutch plates, seals, and gaskets. Common to the era, the original owner was in the process of repainting the tank and body parts to \"something not stock\" so the parts were sprayed in primer when I got them. Therefore I performed the repaint. This was a complete \"nut and bolt\" restoration. Nothing has been re-chromed, it has all simply been cleaned and polished. Regarding how it runs, once I reassembled it, it started right up and ran \"pretty darn good\". I took it for a short ride and everything worked perfectly. I have not tuned it or had the carbs synchronized. It retains all the original wiring and most of the ignition parts. I am sure with a new ignition and carb sync it would run even better. I truly enjoyed this restoration and was anxious to offer it to the BAT world. It had a Kerker 4 into 1 chrome header which sounded like no other bike at that time (and still doesn\u2019t). One of my many great memories with that bike was going with another rider to the 1977 Indy 500, infield side. After the race, we easily made our way past all of the traffic jams in and around the speedway and onto the interstate for our trip home. We did decide to take an alternate route onto a 2 lane highway, which as it turned out, was just recently paved and was as smooth as glass. Unbeknownst to me, my buddy who was on a Kaw 650, decided to \u201ctest\u201d the KZ900\u2019s ability to catch him. We were probably rolling along at the posted speed limit when he took off. I don\u2019t recall downshifting one or two gears, but by the time I shifted to 5th (I redlined each gear getting there) I passed him as though he was going backwards. I slowed and we pulled over to the side of the road and I asked him why he had slowed up. He replied something like, \u201cI was in 5th and near redline when you passed me \u201c!! I believe I saw 150 on the speedo, but not positive, because at that speed I didn\u2019t want to take my eyes off the road. When new they had a hinge in the middle when riding hard in the twisties, the wobbles came later. This was usually caused by maladjusted or worn out steering head bearings and/or worn out swingarm bushings, then they could and did get scary. Taped roller bearings in the steering head and needle bearing conversion in the swingarm fixes that. When I bought my brand new kz650 in 77 (still have it) I had a set of Mulholland shocks installed before I rode it away as all my buddies with 900's had them or a set of Koni's. He's suprised that he can still get them after all these years, but so far the supply hasn't run out. He uses the same sizes on both top and bottom.. tapered bearings.
