Recession times, corporate travel office always sought the cheapest flight, cheapest hotel and of course, the cheapest rental car. I got the Gremlin. I noticed when I picked it up that if you flexed the rear glass hatch from the lower corner, the hatch would pop open even if locked. There was no roll out trunk cover, so I made a mental note not to leave anything in view in the trunk, it being Chicago and all. Our office was in a bad area and we parked on the street. \r\n\r\nAs low man on the scrotum poll, my job was to pick up my boss, the audit partner, from O\u2019Hare at 1:00pm. I was on time, we threw his luggage in the trunk, I locked the trunk and when we got to the office I suggested to my boss that he bring his luggage in and not leave it in the car. This was knowing that my suggestion could elevate me to bellhop status. \r\n\r\nHe dismissed me before I could tell him about the flexing glass/weak lock. So by 6:00 pm his luggage was gone, the trunk lock was still locked and the glass was down but outside the inner lip that should have locked it. The street people knew that car\u2019s weakness.\r\n\r\nThere were a lot of reasons to leave that company, the boss blaming me to everyone that had to listen back at HQ that his luggage was stolen because I didn\u2019t lock the trunk was just the newest one. It's my old Gremlin! \n\nSo other than a generic Gremlin story mine is actually about this exact Gremlin. Over a decade ago I had given my very good and unfortunately late friend Steven Juliano a bunch of rare original Cobra parts that he needed to complete the NOS/ all original parts only restoration of one of his Cobras. He tried to send me money for them and I refused. It wasn't the first time this happened. But, we were friends, and if I ever needed something, I knew he would give it to me. But this time, apparently frustrated him greatly because he finally said \"listen, your shop is a block from the old AMC plant, So I am going to give you a piece of AMC memorabilia that you will love.\" I know FedEx envelope shows up with a title for this gremlin and directions to where it was stored in Michigan. Turns out he saw it on eBay or something like that and thought it was neat so he bought it. That was something he did.\n\nBut, once the excitement of buying a gremlin had subsided, he decided it probably wasn't worth it to ship it to his house in New York or his other house in California so he sent me the title and told me to go get it. And although I'm just on the other side of Lake Michigan from where it was sitting, I didn't really feel like going to Michigan to get it either! So I did what anybody in my position would do. I asked a friend of mine who I was working with at R&T (in Ann Arbor) at the time, Since he was visiting Wisconsin, anyway, if he would mind picking up the gremlin and driving it over to me. We can just call this guy John, well, because that's his name. And John has a good sense of adventure so he was the perfect man for the job.\n\nNot long afterwards John and the Gremlin arrived in Milwaukee. I thought the car was fantastic, John asked me if I was trying to kill him! Not that there was anything wrong with the car he just didn't grow up driving AMCs on bias ply tires. Oh, he did write about the experience in R&T, and made some comments to the effect of he knows why AMC is out of business within that piece. What can I say? He's a sports car guy.\n\nI played with the car for a while and then decided it was time to move it on so I sold it at Mecum Monterey in 2015. A friend of mine who owns a fleet of big orange trucks bought it there. He then sold it at Mecum in the in 2020 if I'm not mistaken. And then it looks like it sold there again in 2022.\n\nIt's a neat old car, doesn't look like it's changed much, and it was always a conversation starter.
