As I became car aware in my teens in the late '70s, I always looked to see the various gauge designs. And the Fords of this era were the worst. \r\n\r\nBig, ugly rectangular speedometer, a fuel gauge, and then a blank space where an optional clock would go. I think there was a rare factory tach option in this year, but even that was a bit of a joke.\r\n\r\nThe earlier Torino ('68-69) at least had a series of round instrument place-holders, though most of the ones you see today were typical of the era and just had warning lights where gauges should go. Some buyers ordered up the gauges and tachometer, but I'm always amazed that even performance-oriented Torino GTs often came with just a speedo and fuel gauge. \r\n\r\nOver at Chevrolet, the base Malibu got a similar horrible-looking rectangular speedometer, but at least the SS models had a completely different IP with round dials. I guess Ford's cost controls dictated that the base Torino 4-door sold to a taxi company and the hottest performance car like this one would all have the same low-brow instrument cluster. \r\n\r\nFord redeemed itself later in the decade, however. I remember that I never rode in a stock muscle that had the instant reaction from the go pedal to the road. I think some of it had to to do with the factory Holley carburetor they had. Another interesting story, there was a very popular 1/2 mile dirt track close to us and I thing only 2 of the late model guys were running Ford, the other 50 Chevy big blocks. The local Ford dealer knew my freind had the 429SJ and we got a call once that one of the Ford guys needed set of heads to be able run the coming Saturday night. The guy was asking for use to give him the heads to use till got a set. We pulled them off and gave them to him. He gave them back the next week with all the factory gaskets to reassemble. Put it all back together and in our minds we thought it ran better. Who knows, we thought the car always ran best when the valves were adjusted just perfect, these engines had solid lifters.
