Just as he finished up, another guy stopped, and started in with the Sven and Ole jokes (he was from Minnesooota, don't 'ya know, and his dad had a 544 when he was a kid...), then, a lady stopped her car and wanted to know if it was a VW (that happens a lot). Some people know what it is, and want to tell their particular \"Volvo story\", others just like it. I guess it just looks friendly.\n\nIf my POS car draws the attention that IT does, I can't even imagine how people must respond to this particular 444.\n\nThe seller also mentioned Ron at SW-EM. I bought his alternator bracket to change to a common (and CHEAP) Delco alternator, and Ron is also very helpful by answering dumb questions. I found a rust-free but harshly sun-baked white '62 on ebay being sold out of Phoenix. It hadn't run in over a decade, and the interior wasn't much more than a set of seat frames w/ springs. But a $1,200 bid made it mine, and I found a fellow in Phoenix who agreed to get it in safe running order for me. Another $3,000 later, and armed w/ a box full of seat foam and some extra bed sheets, I headed out to Phoenix to drive my new baby back home from Phoenix! And did I mention -- I brought my wife and 9 y.o. daughter with me? (I know...a serious test of the marriage!) Anyway, long story short, we set out across the desert, looking very much like the Joads from Grapes of Wrath, and spent a week rambling our way across the country to our home in Maryland! Other than burning a fair amount of oil, and one scary moment when a valve got temporarily stuck, she performed flawlessly. (I will admit, however, that it was an incredibly uncomfortable ride, sitting on foam pads and bed sheets, getting poked by springs...)\r\n\r\nAfter a few years of work, and the realization that I was in way over my head, I parted way with my partially restored 544. But I bought a '61 Volvo 544 race car instead, got my SCCA license, and enjoyed about 5 years of campaigning that beast around east coast race tracks! And my daily driver today is a pristine '71 144. She drives well. No wobbles - she's fairly well balanced. She sounds fine, nothing really unusual for a car her age. Brakes can be a little sticky at times, especially when they warm up, but again, they need to be re-lined. No leaks on interior and only slight dampness on engine oil pan. Gearbox works well, although sometimes third gear will pop out if you don't firmly place it there. I've learned to deal with that so it's not an issue for me. Clutch works well.
